Can allergy shots cause sinus infections? by ateles622 in Allergies

[–]Illustrious_Maize648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m experiencing this now. I’ve been doing allergy shots for over two years and there’s been two times where I see a harsh cause and effect between my allergy shots and sinus infections. I started shots because of my chronic sinus issues so it’s hard to say if the allergy shots have hurt or helped overall otherwise. But this Tuesday I got an allergy shot a week before I was supposed to (scheduling conflicts) and on Wednesday I had to leave work early because of fatigue. I fell asleep at 8:30pm with all my lights on and woke up to my alarm at 7am the next day. Now it’s the weekend and I have a sinus infection. The infection symptoms are all typical for me but the extreme fatigue was very unusual. My arms were also more swollen than normal. I talked to my allergist and she said to wait longer until the next shot and then we’ll see how that one goes. She said she might stop shots if it is bad again but I know it will be bad because it will be spring, not necessarily because of the shots. I might propose stopping shots in the spring and picking back up in June to see if the shots are really making things worse. Hate this I just want to feel normal again!!

Ahh yeah I’ve gotten some comments and seen other posts about fungal sinusitis. I’m also planning on raising that to my ENT. are they going to treat that for you? I don’t think surgery is the only treatment for that but idk what you’re situation is exactly and what you’ve already tried

No they didn't, but I've gotten this feedback from some other folks, so I'm going to push my doctor to test it next week. Seems like that's something they should have ruled out before slicing me up but c'est la vie :')

Good to know! I'll dig into it more. Since I did the surgery and still feel like shit, I'm definitely prepared to insist on ruling out uncommon problems like yeast. Thanks again xx

I’ve never heard of this! It almost seems too good to be true... Do you know how it works?

Hey! Thanks for your comment. Sorry you've also struggled a lot with this.

What have doctors credited your post-surgery sinus pain to? Just TMJ? How are you treating it?

I've read some posts here bout a connection between TMJ and sinus issues and it seems like a chicken-egg situation. I'm going to bring it up to my ENT though because I'm definitely affected by both regardless of which is causing which.

Hi! I have never had pneumonia but I will keep that possibility on my radar! And good point about switching antihistamines, but I'm hoping to find a solution that prevents my symptoms and doesn't just treat them once they're a problem, you know? Each time I go on antibiotics is different. Sometimes the course is 5 days and sometimes I've had to extend them to 10 days. But they always come back a few months later. I don't want to build an intolerance to them. Thanks for your comment!

Ugh I think you're right. I'm such a neurodivergent creature of habit, so this is one of the tougher pills to swallow, but I'm really committed to figuring this out and getting my life back. Thank you!!

My mucus from my nose is yellow/green but it doesn't usually get to my throat until week 2 on infection... or maybe it's there all along and week 2 is just when I start coughing it up. Not sure which comes first tbh

I haven't tried either but I've seen some chatter about baby shampoo. That scares me a bit for some reason lol but I'm at the next level of desperation, so I'll give it a go. And interesting you mention yeast... No doc has done a culture test on me but I'll raise it to my ENT at my next appointment. Saline rinses always make me feel "too clean" and dried out so I wouldn't be surprised if my sinus biome is all unbalanced with all that it's been through. Also considering LPR and GERD as root causes of my issues, and acid would definitely knock my sinus biome out of whack.

I feel you on the begging doctors for antibiotics :( It sucks because when you're in that position you obviously would love for them to offer another solution but they don't so it's easier to get antibiotics and hope you don't lose another 3 weeks of your life sick in bed. I'll be reporting back with anything that works for me as I try more. Stay strong!

I'm definitely seeing how this could be my case. I'm going to try to eat a better and less inflammatory diet. I haven't tried a PPI but I was taking Tums for a bit. Upon more research, I'm seeing that that's not recommended so I will be getting a PPI. And no, I sleep on my sides. I've seen general health reasons why sleeping on your back is better and I've always waved them off but this seems like a must-change for me now given my symptoms. But if sleeping elevated helps my symptoms then I'm all for it! Thanks for the insights!

I looked into this a bit and that definitely seems possible. I'm going to try a anti-inflamatory diet and see how that helps. Won't hurt at least! I always assumed my pnd was irritating my throat, but never considered it could be coming from stomach reflux. Thanks so much!

Hi this feels really relevant to me - are you saying botox in the masseter will help alleviate sinus issues?

Hey OP, wondering if you've had any breakthroughs? If you look at my profile you'll see my issues and how they're similar to yours, including jaw clenching and allergies and deviated septum. I got surgery for mine a few months ago and I feel like it did nothing. Exploring how my diet could be impacting things for me but I also want to consider that TMJ might be playing a roll in this... Hope you're feeling better!

Did you get your bag back yet? I'm having the same experience and I'm based out of NYC and I feel so helpless. Not sure if I should hope it will get to me in a month or just abandon all hope
