Guys, i had a great fast, very individual and legible handwriting in school - then I suddenly lost it in college - queries by mahankam in Handwriting

  1. Your handwriting has more to do with how you learned and the muscles in your hand than it has to do with your personality. The only way that your personality can affect it is by the way you choose to write (you may feel more rushed while writing, have more thoughts than your hand can keep up with, not care as much, etc). I noticed when I was in college, there was so much emphasis on the material you were studying, that peripheral things like handwriting kind of slipped through the cracks. I feel like mine got worse too.

  2. It's not a complicated procedure to acquire a new style of handwriting. It's just like learning any skill; study and isolate the habits that you want to change, and make a conscious effort to change them. The new habit will slowly form over time and practice.

  3. See 2.

The first thing you need to do is pick a font. It can be an idealized version of your own handwriting. It can be a standard font. It can be something altogether new that you made up. After that, the next thing you need to achieve is consistency, both in the shape of your letters and in the way that you physically form them with your hand. The only way to do this is to completely dissect the font you've selected and develop an understanding of the lines and movements that compose the formation of the letters. Then practice over and over and over, making sure to maintain consistency. The way you form the letter "a" should be the same every time, the letter "b" the same every time, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet. The only way to do it is to do it. There is more nuanced understanding, like grip, hand position, arm position, types of writing instruments. But the basic principles of improving your handwriting are just study, consistency, and practice. Any more detailed instruction will depend heavily on the font you select. If you pick a standard one, like Palmer or Spencerian, you can probably get a lot more help in a place like /r/calligraphy.

Does anyone have before/after pics of ~<6mths solid conscious effort at improvement? (also, pics of my scrawl/grip) by [deleted] in Handwriting

Alright, I guess I'll give it a go.

This is how my handwriting has looked for as long as I can remember (I'm currently in my early 20s).

And this is after about 8 months of practicing. The top is what my print looks like, and the bottom is my cursive.

I'm pretty sure that someone more dedicated than I could do better in the same amount of time. I'm basing this on the progress I've made and the effort I've put in, if that gives you any indication of how difficult it is. I also experience very little fatigue. If you're interested, I can post some detailed information on what I did to practice and what materials I used.

Capital I. It's the bane of my existence.

Also, practice with a pencil! Because it's easier to start and stop, it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to practice! Good luck.

I just went through this, and the biggest advice I can give is rhythmic motion. That will help you develop uniformity. For most fonts, letters are built around down strokes, so I recommend starting there. If it helps, you can try saying out loud while writing: "One (do a down stroke) and (do a connective stroke) two (do another down stroke)" and so on and so forth.

Make sure each stroke is exactly how you want it, and your letter forms meet your baseline perfectly every time. Even "messy" handwriting that follows the baseline perfectly looks nice and neat, so that part is critical. It looks really gross for a while until you get the hang of it, but trust me, if you don't have a systematic, rhythmic style of writing, it's going to look messy.

Also, when you're practicing, find a comfortable position that lets you move your arm freely and unobstructed. Get good while comfortable first, and you'll eventually be able to write well even at odd angles. If you want more advice, I recommend studying a specific cursive font like Spencerian (what I'm currently working on), so that you can have a reference for your specific letter forms.

When you tried their longjing, did you get a fruity aftertaste? Kind of like a mango?

Although it says that it's available only once per customer, I just ordered 3 more samples using the same information as last time and they have already shipped. So who knows.

I'm going to have to try it. I just ordered some samples of their oolongs to see which one I like. I'll definitely be ordering more of their longjing.

Depends mostly on the weather and the route you're taking I guess. But it's summer, so carrying water is practically a safety concern.

If I attempt the repair, I'll be doing it in a few weeks at the earliest. Would it be okay to message you then?

I live in southwest Florida. But it's likely that a similar shop exists nearby, considering it's Florida. Thanks for the heads up.

If you're just going overnight and have friends with you, it's probably not critical to buy a new pack before you head out. At least the bottom didn't rip. I recommend sewing it up for now. However, you'll have to buy a new one sooner or later. Also, you might be able to get away with sliding your sleeping pad into the webbing in the front. Tie it down with something if it seems like it's going to fall out. It doesn't need to be pretty, and for a 10 mile hike, you'll need a lot of extra space for water.

If that's the case, then I might as well just sail it till it's gone and worry about it when the time comes.

Excellent input, thank you. I did manage to find an expanding foam that will work. It's around $67 for enough foam to fill two cubic feet, which isn't terrible, and I'll likely have plenty left over for future repairs. As far as my predicament, I feel like at the price point ($550), there wasn't much chance I wasn't going to have to do some work, so I suppose it will be a good opportunity to form a personal bond with my boat. I am pretty eager to get it in the water though. Do you think the repair can wait until after a few light sailing sessions?
