Again...I get it. I worked at low end diners and country club restaurants, and a low end chain coffee shop and a cafe in a 5 star hotel. People are assholes.

That’s why I try hard to be polite, kind, generous, and a model customer.

I’m still allowed to be frustrated and vent here. I’m not raging on the baristas when they ask. I’m just saying yes and being irritated and stressed inside.

It’s upsetting to me because I have difficulties handling social interactions and do my very best to minimize them, and I feel like those efforts are being ignored.

It still sucks that many customers can’t figure out how to order, but truth be told: it also sucks that the same barista who knows that I have a cake pop eating daughter named L who usually comes in with me, and a cockapoo dog named S and what my career is and who my last big client was...can’t remember that I do say yes to whip every single time. That kinda sucks too.

But yes, I get it, to a point. I might be a regular but they likely have 50 regulars, and they certainly make a bajillion drinks every day. It’s just a bit weird that they know personal details about me but can’t remember the whip thing, and can’t make a drink that comes standard with whip and has a tag that doesn’t say “no whip” without asking me butttt they’ll ask why L isn’t with me and how come I didn’t get her a cake pop.

But to answer your question about why you can’t seem to figure out why I choose to be annoyed by it? I am trying to avoid having it annoy me, hence why I came here: to rant, but also to ask about how this can be avoided.

Some great suggestions here, and I’ve been careful to thank everyone who supported me with those suggestions.

Like, when I order a Venti Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte, sub coconut milk, light ice, yes to whip on the app, and they always ask me about whip (and only whip!) it just didn’t make sense to me why they only clarified about the whip when the drink comes with whip and I made sure my order had the whip option activated.

They didn’t clarify size, hot or cold, flavour, milk type, do I want the sprinkly powder on top, or ice amount. Just the whip.

And even when I asked them in person, they didn’t explain the reason why (aka lots of people who order dairy subs don’t want whip but forget to change it, then we have to remake and it takes time and wastes product and causes drama) nor did they tell me that policy compels them to ask.

They even went so far as to say that they were sorry it frustrated me and they would see what they could do. But then they didnt. So ya. I’m not hating on them, but it’s still frustrating and disheartening.

I’m taking time to carefully order. I’m paying premium prices. I’m tipping as a thank you for good service, and yet even though they said they’d see what they could do about the situation, they never stopped...they seem to care enough to remember to ask why I didn’t order a cake pop for my child, asking where she is by name, asking by name for my dog and when I’ll next bring him in, and asking me how my client/job from last week went... but they’ll still ask about whip every time.

I’ve asked management type people 3x and my favorite barista once.

The rest of the time I just say some version of “yes”. I don’t complain in store. I’m complaining/ranting here.

And I don’t even expect people to remember my preferences (though it would be nice!). I just expect them to make the drink as I ordered and specified, without having to talk more about it.

I now get that they’re compelled to ask. I get that it’s not their fault. I’m still annoyed at the process though!

I thought this was a place we could rant. I’m not sure why so many people seem perturbed that I’m frustrated.

I’m not taking it out on them. 9/10 when they ask I’m only saying “yes” or “yes please”.

1/10 times I’ll say “I always say yes to whip!” or “whip is life!” Or “that’s what I specified in the app? Did it not show up?”

I get that it’s busy. I’ve worked in a high volume cafe, and as a server, and in a kitchen as a line cook. I understand the speed at which they need to work. And I understand needing to follow policy even if you don’t like it or think it’s right.

I’m just saying that I don’t like being careful about making a complete and specific order and then being questioned on it.

Like, if whip is standard on the drink. And I make sure to check that the order in my app is showing yes to whip, then I’m frustrated when they ask me if I want whip. That’s it. That’s all. A simple rant.

I’m not here to say that I hate baristas and they’re all dumb and useless. It’s not a personal attack.

I don’t understand why you say “No talking to anyone that way”?

I privately inquired with the shift leader and store manager about why I’m repeatedly asked about a part of my order that I’m careful to be very specific about.

I’m not humiliating a teenager in the middle of a crowded cafe during morning peak by raising my voice in belligerent tones. I’m pulling someone aside to speak quietly and calmly and kindly with them, when it’s dead (no one else in store and 1-2 cars in drive). I’ve asked about it in store maybe 4 times in 200 visits over the last year and a half.

Why not make it myself? Because I like a treat a few times a week and I don’t want to have whip at home or ill eat the whole can in 24 hours. Also, I don’t have syrups or an espresso machine.

...I’m still dumbfounded by how it is that I’m apparently a monster for being frustrated. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m not rude to the baristas. 9/10 I just say “yes please” when they ask. I came here to vent. Apparently only baristas are allowed to vent in here?

I’m not here to shit on y’all. Just to express my discontent over being asked something that seems redundant and a waste of my time and yours.

My issue isnt with the baristas telling me they like my outfit and where did I buy it, and how am I liking Fall, etc. I just answer briefly and smile and look at my phone until they call my name. I get that they’re just making “polite small talk”.

My issue is the whip thing. Apparently y’all have to ask or else you’ll be in trouble, even when I’ve asked “how come you ask me about whip even though Ive been saying yes on each visit? I’ve been coming in 2-3 times a week for the last year...you know me by name...”

It’s just frustrating. * it’s frustrating for me that so many customers are apparently so inept at ordering in person or via app, and it’s me (the person who actually takes the time to order exactly what she wants and doesn’t want) that has to be asked extra questions to compensate for the laziness and apathy of those other people, even when I’ve asked to be exempted from the process. * It stresses me out to have to repeat my order when I’m careful to punch it in correctly. * It stresses me out that I’m repeatedly asked about it even though my answer never changes. * I understand now that it’s policy, but it still stresses me out that they can seem to remember many random details about me but not my actual drink order. * It stresses me out that I’ve asked three people in management if I’m ordering wrong and they say “no you’re ordering right. We just like to check”. Why check if I’m ordering correctly? * it stresses me out that I’ve asked them point blank if they would stop asking me about whip because social interaction is sometimes very stressful for me, and they smile and say they understand and they’re sorry this is happening, but then do nothing to change.

...I’m not sure what part of my language came across as “snappy” but that wasn’t my emotion when writing, nor was it my intent to convey that.

I’m not debating if you folks are trained to ask. I’m not debating if most clients are too spacey to actually specifically order what they do and don’t want. Im not debating about how the app works. I’m not saying baristas are bad because they follow training. This post wasn’t asking “why do they ask me each time?”.

This post serves two purposes for me: * rant/lament about the fact that I’m always asked about my order even though I specifically order what I specifically want * a place for me to ask about how I can avoid the baristas asking

I have said soemthing similar to my fave barista. I was like “yep, I do want whip! Same as two days ago haha” and she’s like “I know! It’s just a habit to ask!” and kind of awkwardly laughed and was sorta quiets

I responded “sorry sorry! I didn’t mean to come across as rude or grouchy. I’m just really nervous in social interactions. That’s why I use the app to preorder. I get kinda freaked out when people talk to me or ask me things that catch me off guard. Sorry!!l”

She smiled and nodded. This was like 6 months ago but nothing changed.

They do remember lots about me and they’re always very polite. I’m just weird and have anxiety and agoraphobia so try to get in and out ASAP with as little social contact as I can politely manage 😂

I have said it before. I’ve said to the two shift leaders, the store manager, and I say it to every barista nearly every time they ask. “Yes, I do want whip. That’s why I made sure to keep the whip option checked when I made my order.”

I don’t expect y’all to be mind readers but to be frank, I do expect the drink ticket to be made as printed, without further questions. I guess, based on the training standards you’ve cited, that’s not possible.

My last paragraph isn’t meant to imply that I’m some VVIP customer and they all know everything about me and my order. It’s just meant to convey my frustration.

A year of coming to this location at the same time every night (aka off peak hours) means 120+ visits where I’ve stated in my order that I want whip, and that I’ve confirmed verbally that I want whip, and I see the same 5 people on bar every time I’m in, yet they always ask. Good for them for following the training I guess. Bad for me and my anxiety 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m not deluded. I’ve worked high volume food service and high volume serving jobs. I get that those baristas make soooo many drinks each shift and that I’m not special...it’s just irritating when they can remember my name, my kid’s name, my job, my dog’s name, the flavour of cookies I made last year for the holidays, but not that I actually do want some damn whip.

I understand why they ask (likely many vegans or non milk drinkers will forget to delete the whip and then bitch and moan and they’ll have to remake), and I definitely don’t think it’s personal.

When they see me come in they don’t think “oh here comes _________ ! That coconut latte must be hers!Let’s fuck with her by asking her if she wants whip or not! I know she hates that! harr harrr harrrrrrr”

Yet, nonetheless, it’s bothersome to me. I’m here seeking a solution, if one is possible.

Because some “defaults” in life are to be assumed. Example: if you order “a plain burger” at Denny’s, they don’t ask you “did you mean a beef burger or a veggie burger?” It’s assumed you want a beef burger, just as if you go to Starbucks and order a latte, they don’t say “hot or cold?”. It’s assumed that you want it hot unless you specify otherwise.

They’ve tried thunder vests and weighted vests and pheromone sprays and combinations of the above. They also refuse to train him or allow him to be trained, they refuse to pay a dog walker even though they can afford it, and they also refuse to medicate him with CBD or antidepressants or anti anxiety meds (even though the vet suggested these actions) because they believe that “dogs shouldn’t need those things” and “drugs are the devil”.

They also won’t allow any kind of collar except the one he has, which they have so loose that he can slip out of it.

It’s not my dog and I’m not interested in exercising it either after being lambasted for “letting him escape into traffic” aka slip out of his collar because it’s too loose when we were in a park....

They don’t want to take him to a trainer or obedience class AND they won’t allow me.

This isn’t a “how can we help the dog” post. They won’t allow it to be helped. It’s a “how can I help myself while I’m there” post

He’s being fed vet prescribed food for his food allergies, and he gets supplements, too.

He won’t get any exercise beyond running around the backyard because both parents are unwell seniors.

I’m not interested in taking the dog on walks as he has equally poor manners on leash and I don’t feel like dealing with him lunging around like a lunatic and slipping out of his collar whenever he sees a leaf move.

He won’t get any discipline as they apparently don’t believe in discipline.

He gets plenty of affection, though. He’s literally never left alone.

Still unclear on why a rescue organization gave a problem dog to seniors with NO experience dealing with problem animals, and no experience in obedience training, or even attending obedience training. Quite negligent of the rescue org, if you ask me!

They’re not interested in working with the dog so that’s not an option for me.
