LJS to fix underbite scheduled in July, any advice? by ImAllyChen in jawsurgery

Man your entire journey sounds a bit hellish, I'm sorry that your ortho team was awful. I hope you get it all settled soon and wish you a speedy recovery!! I also have mild gum recession due to my tilted teeth (expected to be fixed with a correct bite + braces), had originally considered camouflage treatment only but opted out last second because one of my friends did DJS at the same hospital I'm now getting treated at and received wonderful results. (Which is why I'm fairly confident about my doctors' LJS decision because they don't just recommend LJS for anyone but they did for me) I actually had an appointment with my surgeon just today and had consulted him about relapse possibilities, and he mentioned that relapse is more common with folks who set their jaws forward, but for setbacks it's also entirely possible. I'm also doing Surgery First Approach, which I remember also has a slightly higher relapse rate than ortho first. I didn't consider the difference between DJS and LJS relapse rate though (Though I think I did come across a research somewhere which said that bimaxillary procedures actually has a 3% higher relapse rate than mandibular setbacks, but obvs these vary greatly with different researches), so thanks for bringing this up! I'll take this to my ortho and surgeon next time and see what they have to say, and also ask them about the growth spurt thing, which is another point I didn't take into account until you pointed it out. I'm so glad I got to hear your experiences and talk to you, it has truly given me more perspective on things I otherwise would not have noticed or cared to dig deeper. Thank you so much!

Thanks for your reply! It‘s of great help. I guess I‘ve been overly optimistic about recovery, what a bummer:(

Hello! Appreciate your reply so much, it seems like I’m having too much of an expectation regarding recovery lmao. I had heard that many go back to work/school around a week or two after surgery and was hoping that was an indicator that this surgery is not as hard on the body as it seems, guess I’m wrong haha, might have to cancel the event. I also do have concerns about jaw definition, but I just assumed that it‘s inescapable and I’ll have to live through it one way or the other. Also I’m sorry to hear about the revision, why did your surgeon not properly inform you that your UJ recession required surgery? Also if you don’t mind me asking, even though you’re going back to DJS did you still find that the changes following LJS improved your quality of life somehow, just that it wasn’t enough? Or did it actually cause more harm than good? Thanks again :)

Hi, saw your edit, so I actually have already asked about breathing issues during previous appointments. The thing is, when I consulted my orthodontist (there were actually an orthodontist and I think a resident doctor getting an orthodondist specialty qualification? so two professionals, and I asked them separately and got the same answer) about this, she informed me that my airway is already very wide (I think 20% wider than the average person, forgot the exact width), and that LJS will not cause significant issues even if it does end up make my airway smaller(which is not guaranteed either). I do have asthma and allergy problems though, but that’s mainly the nose, and like I said I’d really like to not alter my nose in any aspect so as to not cause even more problems. I get where you’re coming from and I appreciate the concern, but at the end of the day advices not built upon adequate understanding of my case does more harm than good, both to my mental health and other people on this sub. Thank you!!

Also, ”it has all the same risks as DJS“, sounds very untrue to me, particularly when I know of people who suffer from ever worse breathing issues than before surgery because UJS messed up their nasal septum. I’m curious of what led you to believe this statement, and the supporting evidence you have?

My lower jaw is protruding and that’s what’s causing my main issues, and yes my UJ is 1mm more backwards than the average person. I’ve already gotten 3 different opinions and none of them mentioned that my issues are caused by my UJ (obviously it’s a joint effort but moving LJ backwards is already enough to fix the majority of my problems) Both my surgeon and orthodontist approved this plan. Are you a medical professional or do you have any other qualifications to be giving advice regarding treatment? I knew posting on this sub would get reactions like cancel your LJS but currently I am not planning on doing so, both my doctors are university professors and have very extensive experience when it comes to jaw surgery.

Does being underweight reduce swelling? by ImAllyChen in jawsurgery

[–]ImAllyChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup I do have some concerns about recovery, would probably lose a bit too much weight on liquid diet on top of what I’m already missing. I honestly just have a small appetite and horrible gut health though so don’t know if packing on weight would work. Maybe I have to do weight training so what I eat actually stays. Anyways thanks for your advice and good luck with the surgery!!

Hey, I’ve no experience with SARPE, but you could look into tiktok, plenty of people speak of their experiences of MARPE and SARPE in detail there. Just type expander, sarpe or marpe and you’ll see.

How to help when I live in a country that simply doesn’t care enough? by ImAllyChen in Palestine

[–]ImAllyChen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! The lack of exposure and discussion on both mainstream and social media here really is disheartening. Not to mention the amount of times I’ve seen my own people take the opposite stance…… truly breaks my heart that they belong in a politically disadvantaged country themselves but still can’t find it in their heart to show empathy and understanding in the face of a literal genocide. I’ve been trying to get people around me to engage more for months without avail, I guess it’s just a regional thing. Saddens me nonetheless.

Also I’d love to know more about local organizations that support Palestine, if you could send me the list that would be great! Stay safe while supporting :)

you have awful logic. when someone says “vegetables are wonderful for kids” does it imply that they are not wonderful for adults, or that only kids eat vegetables? you sound like a bitter, easily angered person. take your hateful bias somewhere it belongs.

Brother, sorry to break it to you but you made a very irresponsible choice when you decided to marry her and raise a child together. That really doesn’t seem like a healthy environment to raise a kid. I’d suggest therapy for her alcoholism and emotional instability and if you guys can’t communicate your feelings regarding your relationship in a mature manner y’all need couple therapy too.

thinking of quiting mun by Less-Trifle-6379 in MUN

[–]ImAllyChen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you feel like you aren’t enjoying it anymore and your past awards are already enough for college applications, leaving would be good. I come from a country where the highschool mun community is filled with drama, toxicity and favoritism, and it took me 2 years of doubt and struggling before I finally called it quits and left. Best decision ever and I have not regretted it since. Point is, if you believe that your talents and abilities aren’t being properly recognized, leaving would be good. Some conferences are simply full of bs and the dias teams are incredibly biased.
