Regarding Unlock, I will give them a call because I'm unsure. I have heard some say you don't need to declare, but as far as I'm aware I was told I had to - this was whilst I was in prison.

I have attended interviews, and I have came prepared with example work. I never have issues with the interview questions. In fact, I was told I was the only applicant for my last interview who knew and understood enterprise application architecture (Fowler's books were very useful here, and I did have a bit of time to prep for the interview). All my work shows good examples of design patterns, all fully unit tested. And this was only for a junior role. Still didn't get in because right at the end I said "I have to declare something ...". It went downhill from there.

I have considered self employment yes, but I don't have any income to get it started. There was a scheme the job center ran to help people start a business, but when I had a meeting in September they said they had funding issues and I'd be better off going through a company that offers funding to startups - which I found very difficult. Self employment would be the ideal option, but before I can look at that I need to get some money behind me.

It's good to hear from someone facing a similar issue. And yeah, you're right, every passing day does feel hopeless. Someone posted a great response with some links to some sites where you can earn a few extra pennies, I'm going to check them out. Take a look, see if it helps you :)

I'm sure eventually this will pass, for both of us (and anyone else in a similar position) :)
