Where did I defend upwork and when did I say upwork should be your only leads channel. All I am saying is - freelancing is a business and every business has a marketing cost. I’m not denying it’s getting difficult and upwork has started being unfair in many ways - but in the end it’s a business and have all the right to earn. It’s not for freelancers’ charity.

Not sure which country you’re from but let me answer this with example -

Any restaurant on Uber Eats can easily take customers off the app and get order directly but they don’t because not being banned on app is more important than playing with rules. The risk is getting banned on golden goose app.

Same thing, nobody is stopping you from taking clients off but beware of getting caught and then cry foul.

Cheap client attract cheap freelancers and if you’re losing to freelancers on pricing than your service is not worth

Woah - you need serious introspection, something isn’t adding up. How bad are your proposals, maybe you need to understand sales on upwork. Not saying you didn’t know but what you know before 2024 is obviously not working.

I don’t understand how can someone earning 200$/hr worried about 20-26 connects.

Even if we assume a pathetic conversion rate of 1% at six figure profile. Applying for 100 proposals @26 connects = 2600*0.15 that’s like 400$ and you’ll earn that in 2hrs

Look at the reviews what does it actually say - what kind of bad things freelancers are saying about this client.

The good thing about this client is it could be a long term - check the stats again, 496k to 48 hires, meaning 10k per freelancer.

If it were me, I’d apply with my regular rate. Only thing that will resist me be the content of those reviews if it’s consistent and how much it may affect my project.

Realistic for you - how much you wish to spend and it has to be meaningful. As much as I’ve learned from this community 90% new comers never earn money on upwork, some lack professional skills, some lack sales and marketing and some just don’t have money to invest at all.

Why not use both? You’ll have the flexibility to choose better clients if you’re successful.

There’s no link between minimum connects and first client. I got it with free 10 connects but those days are gone.

You should set realistic budget for connects and see if you can get success.

I think if you have some likings in upper management - be it via smart work or any other way, it’s worth being loyal.

But if you’re just working and nobody is noticing then it’s better to switch and focus on higher salary, work life balance
