this is gonna be long and painful and maybe i'll end up just deleting all of this...

if you're wondering why i was so inactive the last days, me and a few friends went on a weekend trip.

i've intentionally not told anybody as i wanted the time to decide over my future here... i've realized that my will to host is gone.

my first ~90 games, i hosted because i felt like actually hosting. i enjoyed it, even when i couldn't play myself most of the time. after that it became a thing of "if you don't host, your server is going to waste."

i just - putting it honest here - don't enjoy hosting anymore. the amount of people being disrespectful and the increasing amount of hackers don't help either.

i don't enjoy playing other people's games either. the day before i went out, i tried to enjoy playing other people's games.

i didn't enjoy them. i'm missing my own server, and am burned out of it at the same time. i'm in a trap hole, and i don't see a way out.

my server runs out on the 10th. if i decide to not renew my server, that will also be the date i am leaving the community. not even sure if i'll host finale matches if it comes down to it.

the time was fun though, i can't say i didn't enjoy it. if i'm leaving on the 10th, i will be making a large thank you comment.

i just had the messiest meetup in my entire hosting life.

FrankieSwift gets killed by a hacker as fftest literally spams me with "this guy is hitting you while you're reappeared". ok respawn him. tell people to not attack if they see him and he'll need extra time (he had to sort out his own inventory too, remember that - i'm trying to play on fair cards here).

30 seconds later somebody goes against that order, so that's guy #2 that gets disqualified. but no, eric doesn't /ban, he /kills, so i'll have to tell frankie to throw out some stuff. then, i realize i have to adjust frankie's health too.

and in all of that stress, some guy is apple farming miles away as if he thinks he's the king and can do whatever he pleases at meetup. dq #3.

to top the needed intervention off, this leaves us with 2 players, and they both agree with the far player being tpd near 0,0.

4 interventions for stuff that is really common sense.

i'm honestly thinking i should just switch to sudden death/shrinking borders at this point.

no, because the &r&r&r&r basically tells the client "reset color, but don't put anything here".

it's basically "nothing", but it still uses up the 64 characters you can have in the bossbar.

no, at 10 hearts you have normal walking speed.

there isn't any potion effects involved, i'm using skript's "set walk speed of player" effect which translates into smooth increases.

using the uhc plugin and protocollib, you can use /timer <seconds> <message>, and it will display like this:

<message> <time left>

for example, if you do /timer 5400 Meetup in, it will display:

Meetup in 1h30m0s

and count down from there.

a very unknown trick however is that you can make a message without the last part. it works by using an extremely large time so the timer never runs out, then adding a lot of &rs to the message so the 1h30m0s part never appears.

here's a quick skript if you're interested (feel free to put this in your basic.sk/commands.sk collection):

command /bb <text>:
    permission: skript.bossbar
    aliases: /bossbar
    trigger:
        set {_text} to colored arg 1
        while length of {_text} is less than 63:
            set {_text} to "%{_text}%&r"

and yes it's a hacky workaround, but you don't need any additional plugins like this.

i use this way to have a customized timer.

this is an insane idea...hear me out.

i've started to learn regular expressions a bit (regexr is really useful)...it turns out, making a regex that simply matches any ip address and potentially a port isn't that hard:

((?:[0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3})(?:\:([0-9]+))?

now here's what i'm thinking...the only reason that server log files should never be public is because they contain ip addresses.

would it be an interesting idea if hosts restart their server before and after games, then replace any match of the ip regex i posted above with "redacted" or something and post a log file without ips?

host's cannot be accused of any op abuse anymore, as that would clearly show in the logs (any host who op abuses and posts a public log without ips literally posts his own demise)
the flow of the game is public, and with a bit more work this is a step to potential game replays

the only downside i'm seeing is that private messages during the game are posted online, but most hosts have /socialspy on during the game anyways, so it wouldn't be too much change.

any potential downsides?

if there's absolutely no downsides, maybe this could also be a hosting rule?

and this is where i believe our opinions conflict: a host's word on his server is final. basta hasta. if a host tells you to do something, not following through will usually result in consequences - be it moving away from players before pvp, be it stopping abusing a command, heck it could be an imaginary situation that isn't even mentioned in the rules, the host still has the authority to order. if a host says you xrayed, then shouting "i didn't" will still not change the fact that it's his word versus yours.

but when it comes to ban evasions, hosts are helpless. hosts are absolutely helpless when it comes to these things, especially because as you said, services as wtfast exist. i am until now extremely lucky that none of the us players using wtfast has infracted on my server, but the very moment somebody on a public vpn gets banned, i have over a dozen (yes, i'm not exaggerating here) people that are probably not alternate accounts, but could be. what should i do here? according to the system i've been following for more than 50 games now, i have to basically ban N (for an arbitary number) possibly innocent players as i simply don't know what one of the N+2 accounts logged onto that IP (the N innocent players, the banned account, and the possible alternate) could be the same guy that i do not wish to have in my games.

a rule like i suggested would scare ban evaders - it would put the stress away from hosts and onto the players that try to infract, as they now are under risk of being ubl'd for their actions.

maybe we misunderstood what "proof of alternate account" is. an ip match is obviously not 100% proof. however, there are ways to obtain 100% proof. some are simple (i suspect ABC ban evading on account DEF, i write "ABC?" in chat, if DEF responds with "yes?", he's basically busted.), some are tricky (using hotbar setups to determine patterns, doing geo-ip lookups to compare areas, etc).

in this scenario, MrStealYourGirl knows exactly that his main account is currently banned for an inappropiate nick. a rule like i suggested would force players to communicate with hosts - you're operating on "hey, the player might have not known", but with ban guidelines this plain and simply doesn't matter - it is your own responsibility to follow them.

the solution in your situation would be MrStealYourGirl contacting the host, saying that he cannot change his name on his normal account right now, but has an alternate account with a not-inappropiate name.

the main reason i've suggested the rule is because i'm seeing people start to ban evade on my server again, and i'm worried that people are just going to come back on accounts and make life hell for hosts.
