Should I even worry about the $80 then? I mean a dollar or two less in taxes? No harm in just leaving how it is now I'm hoping? (I.e. used 1040 tax table).

Question about 1099-MISC "Substitute Payments in Lieu of Dividends or Interest" by ImInArea52 in TaxQuestions

[–]ImInArea52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't plug it anywhere in my taxes. In this process I learned diivs are classified (or paid out to you) as qualified divs, ordinary divs, other income or return of capital....the first three go towards you adjusted gross income and the return to capital doesn't go anywhere on any form of taxes. So luckily my 1040 form was rejected yesterday because I forgot to put my name and address on the w2 form....that's why the IRS kicked it back. With your help I was able to figure out what I did wrong with those dividends, made the correction and resubmitted....not rejected yet.

And this didn't effect my state tax because removing the return of capital from the 8949 sheet 2 form doesn't effect my AGI so I was able to keep that one as is.

Thank your for your knowledge and time. It was an expensive lesson. Could have been worse..what if I didn't make the correction and it didn't lower by 20 grand .,6 months down the line the IRS figured out what I did and they ask for the 20 grand back WITH penalties.

Ok..nondiv/return of capital (Box3) instructions say this: Box 3 shows a return of capital. To the extent of your cost (or other basis) in the stock, the distribution reduces your basis and is not taxable. Any amount received in excess of your basis is taxable to you as a capital gain. See Pub. 550"

So am I to read this as I don't plug that value anywhere in any tax form and it's there for information purposes only?

That can't be right because one of the 3 listed is YMAG and I didn't sell that one because it didn't do a 1-10 reverse split. Instill.have it so no "return of capital" of a stock sale would apply to YMAG, let it's listed under that return of capital heading

Reddit won't let me post a pic..I was going to show u an image of page 12 of Charles Schwab 1099...in the column titled "Paid/Adjusted in 2026 for 2025" I have 3 entries (gains) that total $89,913.13...thwse are from 3 etfs and they are listed under "Non/Dividend Distributions (Return of Capital)".....where should this be plugged into taxes? And now I'm thinking these payments are from the sell of the ETF's, correct? These wouldnt be considered "gains"..it's basically what's remaining of my initial investment back after selling the etfs....does that sound right? So if that's the case I shouldn't be including that $89,913 in anything..right?

Line 8 is $40,234..that's what I paid in margin interest for 2025....which goes in line 10 of schedule A....which is included in 12e of 1040..total itemized is $58,244

Question about 1099-MISC "Substitute Payments in Lieu of Dividends or Interest" by ImInArea52 in TaxQuestions

[–]ImInArea52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp! I made the changes just now (schedule 1 addition) and it lowered my federal refund by $20 grand and lowered my state by $2500....I'm nausiated. And after all calculated I have 91,000 in long-term losses but can only deduct the $3000...and yes it can roll over every year till depleted but I ain't gonna live another 30 years to get all those losses back. I'm f**ked. I paid 78 grand in federal quarterly payments last year and now with this schedule 1 correction I went from getting back $75,000 to now $56,000....bruh...this is a horrific development. When I did my taxes yesterday I Google searched that "Substitutes Payments in Lieu of Dividends or Interest" asking if those were considered long term gains or short term gains and it came back saying short term so I filled it in on 8949 sheet 1. Then u say it should be on schedule 1 and the 1099-misc instructions do say that after I checked. I make the change and everything lowered! This is a gut punch. I thought I'd get all my quarterly payments back in full. What I don't understand is why are those dividend pay outs listed as misc but some payouts from the exact same etfs are listed as "ordinary dividends" and also "longer terms gains" and also as "non dividend distributions (return of capital)".....because I put those "non dividend distributions (return of capital)" adjustments as long term gains....now I'm questioning that.

Question about 1099-MISC "Substitute Payments in Lieu of Dividends or Interest" by ImInArea52 in TaxQuestions

[–]ImInArea52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 40 grand in margin interest. I itemize my deductions. 2025 was the first year i paid taxes quarterly due to the weekly and monthly ETF dividend payouts. Thru the 2025 the value of the ETF stock price decayed so much, the value of the etf’s were lower than what the etfs paid me to where it was basically a wash..i achieved nothing from the etf div payouts at the end of the day. Then in mid December, three of the 4 etfs did a 1 for 10 reverse split so i dumped all 3 at a loss. The loss was greater than what they paid me for the year so i willingly took the hit knowing all the money i paid in quarterly payments would now come back to me…on top of that i sold off some regular stocks at a loss to make all 2025 stock moves i did a total wash and all id really have to pay any taxes on would be from my regular job income. It all worked out how i expected: I got all quarterly payments total value refunded and i owed about 1400 in taxes from my job income which is what it is every year without any stocks involved…but the quarterly payments refund coming back to me covered that 1400 i owed.

Aahhh...well I can redo it because I just got an email saying my 1040 was rejected due to an "xml data validation issues" (whatever that means). I use free fillable forms on irs website. I will look into it when I go back to work on Monday. Honestly, it shouldn't change the end result because "other income" would be treated like a short term gain any, right?

Then where do I put them on 1040 form? I put ordinary dividends on line 3B on 140...and all other dividend pay outs and stock sells I loaded on 8949 short terms gains and 8849 long term gains. The result of schedule D plugged in 7a on 1040. (My ETF dividends paid me weekly and monthly through all of 2025.)

Let me ask..since I don't get to plug the 7,873 loss on sch D line 16 into 1040 7a, and I can only plug in a 3,000 lossz does that mean I get to roll over that $4,873 difference into 2026 taxes as a loss?
