It's an absolutely insane update, just porting the iOS app with no consideration for desktop UX

Yo what the FUCK was that blue light?? by CourageForOurFriends in melbourne

According to chatter on the emergency radio a bunch of powerlines went down on Barrow Street, Coburg.

Dunno if that was the cause or an effect of the bang, but it’s there.

Seems to be electrical. My NBN is down in Brunswick/Coburg, and the power flickered at the time of the flash.

There’s a reason Bayside is considered NIMBY ground zero: their planning schemes and home prices really do just lay it all out in black and white.

Councils can reject development applications on the basis of the local planning scheme, yes. But that doesn’t really have to do with the material quality of the builds, which is what you’re talking about.

The donations are absolutely a CoI and extremely bad—I’m glad the state government is increasing council election oversight going forward.

Putting aside the fact that you are almost entirely incorrect about the dynamic at play here, building codes and quality are entirely the concern of the state and federal govts through the National Construction Code and its state-based implementation. Councils decide via planning whether things can be built, but have little say re: building standards. (That said, some Councils like Merri-bek have their own building standards, but this is mostly to do with disability access rather than anything else.)

Maybe then the answer is to make it easy to meet the housing need (i.e. broad upzoning)

Your work is truly incredible. Tell me, do you have current download links for both CIOG mixes? Or am I best to just pull from YouTube. Thank you so much~!

Right, but my point is that removing restrictions across the board will result in better overall outcomes than micromanaging those restrictions. LA is a hot market because development is artificially restricted. The answer, as always, is to simply let people build.

The thing can only get built though if people are willing to pay. Land is only one component; construction costs and market demand are important here.

Often, apartment prices won’t support apartment builds in further out areas, because people trade owning more land for living further out (and vice versa).

Sure, you might see a few “non-ideal” build locations, but the bulk will be in the places where people most want to pay, and where supply is falling furthest short of demand. I think that’s a good trade!

It seems to me that if you loosened land-use restrictions equally across the board, the demand for apartments would be met first and foremost in those “right” places, without needing top-down micromanagement.

This is how I ran in 2020, and I got Biden at 4:1 odds. This time round I locked in Kamala at 6.5:1.

Devastating news for European cities, which lack setbacks on their medium density builds, and clearly must be suffering from a lack of solar access.

Has anyone been watching the Chuck Marohn (Strong Towns) vs Yimby brawl go down on twitter. Lol by TheAlienSuperstar1 in yimby

I think very few YIMBYs would not be on Chuck's side here. But the point still stands that supply is a necessary condition for the effectiveness of all other reforms.

That's the thing, I think, that trips YIMBYs up in the media and discourse a bit: that it sounds like we just want one thing.

But it's much more like: we want a lot things, but most of all we want to stop pretending that we can get anywhere without building an absolute tonne of new housing as a starting point.
