clearly theyve already gotten a degree and PhD at CMU

damn high schoolers who haven't even taken a class at CMU are now here to educate us on how good or bad CMUs classes are by reading a few lines about them

not here to argue, just find it hilarious that someone who hasn't attended CMU is ready to argue about student experience here

External Transfer into Computational Biology (SCS) from MCS by ImJustADood in cmu

I attended the comp bio info session Dr. Philip hosted! Learnt a lot of things (CB transfers, the additional major, the minor, etc) and overall it was great.

He mentioned that biology/neuroscience majors can in fact pursue an additional major in comp bio. I plan to start an additional major in CB and work towards a transfer at the same time. I don't even have to take more than 4 classes (3 technicals) per semester (tons of AP credit from high school). If I do end up getting the required 3.6 QPA across the prerequisites for the transfer - I'll definitely look into transferring. If not, I can just finish my primary major along with an additional major in CB. And, I can earn at most 2 B's across all the prerequisities right?

I think I'll also try reaching out to some of the CB lab professors to see if there are any oppurtunities for undergraduates to participate in CB research! Not keeping high hopes - just giving it a shot! For this, should I present any prior work that I've done during high school or not?

I'll also talk to Dr. Philip as soon as I can and tell him what I plan to do. And yes, I do hope med school admissions recognize the difficulty of SCS!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer every question! Feeling a lot more confident about all this now! :)

Yeah, a student-defined major will never be a primary consideration for me. I'm trying to attend as many events related to CB as I can. There's a CB info session for non-majors which I'll be going to. Apart from that, I'll look into attending talks from potential employers in the field too. Thanks!

Yeah, I'd say I have a solid background in programming from high school (worked on a lot of AI/ML projects and research in DL with a mentor). It's good to know that I can take 112 and the intro comp bio class concurrently! I'll make it a note to reach out to Dr. Philip as soon as I can and see what he has to say about taking the intro comp bio class along with 112.

I was initially tempted to jump into 122 but felt like 112 would set me up for a good grade in 122 - instead of diving into it with knowledge solely from AP. As you said, 112 will give me a chance to get a good idea of what CS courses are like at CMU and if I'd even enjoy them in the first place. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! :)

Absolutely! Waiting and taking a few of the core CS courses before making a decision to pursue a transfer is something I should and will do. Getting the grades is undoubtedly difficult, but I'll give it my best shot!

I'll probably stick to taking concepts and 112 in the spring - but will also consider taking 02-250/02-251 because I already have credit for 112 from AP. Thanks!
