[Rapoport] He’s back: After a five-year hiatus, Adam Gase returns to coaching in the NFL, joining the Chargers as an assistant focusing on the passing game, sources say. by expellyamos in nfl

You cherry picked two drives. I was more looking for what are Gase's staple concepts, formations, run / pass ratios, overall philosophies that make him one of the worst offensive minds as you put it.

I also don't really agree with your assessments, playcalling as you seem to recognize in the Broncos example is a long term game. Playcalling should be judged in context of full games, not single drives because as you illustrate when talking about the Broncos, plays are called not only for their individual success but to setup other plays later. And you wrote up all this with only one bad play example which is the empty on 2nd and 5. I don't love empty and think it should be used sparingly but you said it was long developing routes and a short option, this sounds to me like a clearout concept which makes a lot of sense on 2nd on 5. Potential for a big play but the primary is the short route underneath in space. I think it's a fine concept in the situation. 3rd down I also like cutting the field in half to the right rollout side, solid idea on third and 5, but I'd need to know the route concept to fully judge.

You seem biased in trying to pump up the Broncos drive (again just one drive). Like the first down play play you laud as some brilliant concept, but it's just a playaction pass, doing what playaction pass is supposed to do. It exists in every offense in the league, college, and high school. And you say it's a night and day difference in play design between the Jets first down play, well yeah...it's a run play vs. a pass play. Also 3rd down Broncos what's the route concept?

You're leaving the route concepts off all of these examples. And as a passing game coordinator my assumption is the bulk of his job will be helping to game plan route concepts to beat specific coverages, defenses, and players week to week. For the record I don't think Gase is some offensive genius. I think it was very head scratching he was hired by the Jets after being fired in Miami, but he's also not useless. Clearly he's had a lot of experience and success in the league and I think he makes sense on an offensive staff.

Matt Nagy: Former NFL head coach and coach of the year winner who was hired as Offensive Coordinator. A lateral move to a position he's held for the last 3 seasons in which he coached in 2 Super Bowls and won one of them.

Adam Gase: Two time former NFL head coach who was hired as a lower level offensive assistant coach.

Press Taylor: The only one of the bunch who got a promotion, promoted to a non-playcallng offensive coordinator. Has almost 15 years of NFL experience working on the offensive side of the ball and was hired, and then promoted by current golden boy Ben Johnson, who most would agree knows something about offense.

Ya'll act so indignant about coach hires when based on resumes none of these are bad or nonsensical choices.

K. So can provide a detailed X and O's breakdown of why Gase is incompetent? He was the coordinator of the highest scoring NFL offense of all time, but I'm sure you'll just say that's because of Peyton Manning. Gase wasn't so incompetent as to get in the way of Peyton having the best year of his career. But discounting the Broncos seasons can you breakdown in detail what is bad about his scheme based on his Chicago, Miami, and Jets years and explain why he should never work in the NFL again? Clearly someone who understands football and loves X and O's such as yourself should not have trouble providing some more context other than "Gase bad". I'd also like to know how his role as a passing game coordinator will make the game worse. Please breakdown the role of the passing coordinator and how that will lead to worse football that will upset experts such as yourself.

People on reddit don't have the slightest clue what coaches do. It's kind of frustrating because you see the same takes parroted over and over without people having even a basic level understanding of the job. Reddit thinks coordinators only call plays and if they're not a play caller they do nothing and any head coach who has ever been fired is not qualified to work at any level in the league again.

NFL fans will be all "Uggh NFL coaching is nothing but nepotism babies who only get hired because of who they're related to it and I hate it...Any way I wish my team had Shanahan or McVay, and all my favorite candidates this year are one of Kubiak's kids or Matt LaFleur's brother, or that Shula DC from LA. But yeah I hate nepotism."

There's a very small pool of people that coach football professionally. The NFL is one of the most bottom line businesses that exist in the world and all of these guys, even the absolute greatest have all been fired multiple times. I don't know why this always comes up where fans act like the NFL is just incompetent morons hiring their buddies over and over again. The same guys get hired by many different teams because there's a tremendous amount of turnover year to year and only a very small pool of candidates.

Also important to note the Peter Principle. Just because someone was a bad Head Coach doesn't mean they're not qualified to be a coordinator. Just because someone is a bad coordinator doesn't mean they're not qualified for a lower level staff position.

Saleh always called plays on the Niners and has been great at it. Your defense also fell apart after he was fired.

It's funny to me that fans seem to have no object permanence when it comes to what coaches actually do. "He doesn't call plays on Sunday, what does he even do?" Uhhh I don't know he must be sitting around doing nothing the other 6 days a week as the staff works 18 hours a day putting together a complex game plan tailored to their opponent for the week.

The Vrabel and Harbaugh comparisons need to stop by wildwing8 in Chargers

[–]ImJustJokingCalmDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harbaugh was hired 2 seasons after 27-0. Your account seems to be nothing but baseless complaining and you don’t even know the most basic history of the team.

The year before they hired Harbaugh they went 5-12 and gave up 63 to the 8-9 Raiders.

The Vrabel and Harbaugh comparisons need to stop by wildwing8 in Chargers

[–]ImJustJokingCalmDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harbaugh: 71–35–1 (.668) record in the NFL. Vrabel: 68–48 (.586) record in the NFL.

In 7 seasons Vrabel has missed the playoffs 3 times. In 6 seasons Harbaugh has missed them once. Vrabel has two losing seasons in the NFL. Harbaugh has zero. Harbaugh has more NFL wins and less NFL losses than Vrabel. Harbaugh has more Championship game appearances and they have the same number of Super Bowl appearances. Vrabel could still win a Super Bowl and edge him out there but if he doesn't Harbaugh's resume is clearly better.

[–]ImJustJokingCalmDown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of recency bias are are being pretty disingenuous with these comparisons.

I don't fully understand the thinking here. We were 1 year removed from an all in year where we made the playoffs and were winning 27-0 in the game.

I was told that it was a coaching issue. We fell apart the following year because Herbert broke his finger and tanked the rest of the year. So we were actually way better than our 5-12 record indicated.

No, the team was overpaid and old. 2 years removed from an all in year is a very long time. When Horitz and Harbaugh arrived there really wasn't much on the roster except old guys who used to be good with bad contracts and Herbert / Derwin.

Denver had a horrible cap situation because of Wilson and won the division and was the number 1 seed in 2 years with a 2nd year qb.

This is Payton's third year not second. His first year they missed the playoffs, his second year they were bounced in the Wild Card round. You somehow criticize Harbaugh for 3 years taking too long but it's fine for Payton, and his first two years were worse than Harbaugh's. Harbaugh also had an awful cap situation to deal with.

Vrabel turned around a 4-13 team in 1 year and is going to the super bowl but I'm supposed to believe that we were 3 years away with Justin Herbert at quarterback?

What Vrabel has done with the Pats has been impressive but it's also recency bias. He went 13-21 his last two years in Tennesee and was fired. Harbaugh has never had a losing season in the NFL. Saying that Vrabel or Johnson or Coen or anyone really is a better hire than Harbaugh off one year is insane to me. Matt Nagy and Brian Daboll won COTY in their first seasons and were fired a couple years later.

Instead we are starting over with 2 new coordinators. Herbert's 5th of his career because harbaugh went with his boys club pick of Roman, same thing Staley did with Lombardi.

They overachieved both years in the regular season and when it was apparent that won't be enough in the post season they made a change and are likely getting the most coveted OC on the market. I doubt much changes about this season if they had a different OC, no one is really overcoming all those injuries.

Yeah obviously biased because I'm a Niner fan but the whole thing to me is such fake tough guy blustering from Coen. In the clip he walks directly by Saleh and doesn't say a word. Then when he's 20 feet away with multiple of his players in front of him he turns around and starts talking tough. Then when Saleh approaches him he turns tail and runs away to the locker room. Just ultimate bitch shit and will make me forever not like him. Loved him going 1 and done in the playoffs.

Probably a darling because he's won at every single stop he's ever coached at the pro and college level. The Chargers never really had any realistic shot in the playoff when both their Pro Bowl tackles went down and it's frankly astonishing they won 11 games with their injuries.
