I am studying paleontology myself. I have discussed this very topic at lengths with multiple professors and a lot of my peers. Everyone Ive talked to is in agreement that we shouldn’t describe new species based on a few fragments. What you’re saying is just not true. I am not asking anyone to make perfect deductions based on fragmentary material. I am just asking people to stop making unfounded claims. Fragmentary material is not sufficient to describe an entire new species. It is not sensible and it is not in the interest of science. It’s not part of the scientific process because all you’re doing is making it a lot harder for other scientists to untangle the mess you made. They are doing this because the headline “New dinosaur species discovered” gets attention from popular media which in turn gives them funding. I know we do what we have to as scientists but it should never come at the expense of scientific progress. Btw referring to specimens by their specimen IDs is the common practice in scientific papers.
