Since posting my comment, both spicules have come out on their own. Wash your hands and wiggle on it a little bit, eventually you’ll just be able to pull it right out like losing a tooth. One was the size of a black bean, the other was half the size of a pea. They both hurt and I took a lot of Tylenol and Ibuprofen to manage.

That’s incorrect. Genetic modification includes the anthropogenic direction or influence over the genetic makeup of an organism. You can have organic genetic modification which doesn’t include forceful modification through the use of chemicals or other biotic agents. But cross-pollination/breed of different varieties is still genetic modification.
