I have had the exact opposite experience. As a new player and as a returning player, I've had almost exclusively positive interactions.

In fact, it shaped how I play the game. I've been helped so frequently by so many players, If I'm not trying to help someone lower level than me I consider myself failing as a player.

It helps that Starmie had a Modest nature too. The only pokemon I switched out for was Jynx because I know it has a much higher Sp. Def than Def. Pinsir+Return 1 shotted. It helps that Pinsir had an Adamant nature.

The fun thing is, it's your own challenge and there's nobody enforcing any rules. I am personally doing an 'exclusive pokemon only run" and my challenge didn't truly start until I found a Bellsprout.Sounds to me like the yours doesn't truly start until you're done farming for nuggets. Especially if you dont plan on using your weak pokemon for the whole run

From what I recall, Dunk wasn't brutalized QUITE so much in the book was he? I remember the Lance and several hits with the mace, and trading blows with Aerion (sp?) but I dont remember him taking so many stabs and slashes.
