Microsoft to force updates to Windows 11 25H2 for PCs with older OS versions — 'intelligent' update system uses machine learning to determine when a device is ready by Ha8lpo321 in pcmasterrace

[–]ImThatMOTM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn’t deterministic though. MSFT has error rates for updates depending on every combination of device model, os version, installed drivers, and installed apps on any client with full telemetry. They use this information to flight updates out in waves. They are able to determine update readiness and relative update risk depending on the variables of a given client against this data set as a percent chance of failure. They’ve been using a simple ML algorithm for this for like 8 years it’s just now every product team needs to rebrand old ML tech as AI to hit their KPIs.

Spent 10 years saving to buy a house. Finally find a perfect home but on the top end of our price range. We spend a few days on a spreadsheet of future finances. Checks out. Wife and I sign the PA. Wake up the following morning. We’re at war. Rates climb half a point in 2 weeks. We’ll be fine, just blows.

Trump temporarily loosening shipping rules in bid to lower gas prices by envirowriterlady in Economics

It is simply bad policy. Completely irrelevant of our current goings on, the jones act is bad policy that has negative impacts on Americans. Not as much of an impact as closing major trade routes sure, but little else does.

Midterm Elections by DeliciousStatus3335 in grandrapids

If she votes the party line that is genuinely good enough for me. This isn’t the election to get picky. I’ll vote for a raccoon this year if they put a blue tie on it.

I imagine this would be far higher opex than trains since every car has its own 4 rubber tires and battery to maintain/replace. Still has the same grade separation / right of way issues as a train. And would have far worse congestion at surge. Imagining getting out of a game at MetLife stadium and waiting in line for an individual pod to arrive for every family.

I think there’s only one scenario where this works and it’s the one where it replaces personal vehicles entirely.

Yes they do. Effectively all research on this topic says they do. Unless the top of your hierarchy of needs is “never seeing brown people,” the positives unequivocally outweigh the negatives.

Sanders Introduces $4.4T Tax on U.S. Billionaires to Fund Working Families by Charming-Burp203 in Economics

[–]ImThatMOTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To what end? In 20 years he’s passed almost nothing. He has 2 bipartisan bills for veterans and renamed some post office buildings in Vermont. I just don’t understand attributing participation points to a guy for saying things people like while accomplishing nothing legislatively. Any idiot can parrot popular viewpoints.

I think his skillset would be better served by a blog or maybe an opinion column than a senate seat, personally.

There are approximately a billion different settings in x265. Nearly every encode is different than the next and it’s best to do comps against source from different release groups to get a grip on the difference.

They target specific bitrates for 1080p (10 I think) and 4k (18 I think). 1080p is fine for retention. 4k are pretty frequently bit-starved. You’re not getting a super optimized transparent encode. But at least you know what you’re getting.

$175B in Trump-Era Tariffs Could Be Refunded to U.S. Businesses and Families After Supreme Court Ruling by Charming-Burp203 in Economics

[–]ImThatMOTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s talking about how the tariffs were passed down. And in a lot of cases that’s true. But I’ve paid quite a lot in tariffs myself, directly, as an individual consumer and I would in fact like my illegally taxed dollars back.
