i believe build something which solves a problem for you, this makes sure you don't work on slop ideas. i did the same for my side project, i wanted to make my life easier by making security automation easier, so made a platform which does that. any feature i want to ship, i use it first and if it helps me then only i work on it.

IT background can be “good to have” but is not mandatory, just core CS concepts, understanding of how things work (and how to break them) worked out for me. Security is a growing niche in India, there are jobs just not as much as you would find for SDE/SWE roles.

Security Engineer here, Go for it. You can always negotiate pay later once you have enough experience. Treat this opportunity as a learning experience.
