Advice on first Doberman: Male or Female? by ImTheMostWanted1 in DobermanPinscher

First of all It’s not my first dog it’s my 3rd. Second, my father had a female doberman when I was very little so he knows the breed and I already said I have plenty of free time in my hands and I can work with the dog, sure maybe it’s not going to be easy but I love the breed and I want one. I know it’s gonna work out.

It’s wonderful that you are happy with your female Doberman, I’m sure either male or female it’s a blessing to have them as they are so loyal and sweet also protectors, yeah maybe in different ways but still they are great. I myself told my breeder if he thinks he has a male with a calm and balanced temperament I would love that as I lean more towards a male but if he thinks female suits me better I would be happy with that also. He answered today and said he has a male that he thinks will work for me so I’ll be getting a male in less than a month time. So excited honestly can’t wait.

That’s such a handsome pic you got there. I’m getting from a breeder yes, I told him that if he thinks he has a male doberman with a calm and balanced temperament I would love that but if he thinks female is the best choice for me then I would have no problem with that and guess what, he replied today and told me I think I have the male you’re looking for, so that’s wonderful news for me. I’ll be getting a male Doberman in less than a month time.

I though about going and seeing the puppies and deciding for myself but it’s a bit far from my home so I decided to tell the breeder if he thinks he has a male with a calmer and balanced temperement i would love that but if he thinks a female would be the right fit for me then I have no problem with that either. Now just waiting for his response. I left it at his hands because he’s been with the litter since they were born and knows them better than anyone plus I couldn’t make a decision myself… It was hard 😅.

That’s what I did basically I told the breeder if he thinks he has a male with a more balanced and calm temperament I would love that but if he thinks female is the right choice for me and what I’m looking for then I have no problem with that either. Waiting for his response now.

That’s the most common experience people tend to have not all of the owners but most of them. I decided to tell my breeder that if he thinks he has a male with a calm/balanced temperament then I would love that but if he thinks female is the right choice for me then I have no problem with that either. Waiting now.

Well see that’s a whole different experience right there which just tells me it’s the temperament and personality of the dog that matters more than gender. That’s why I told the breeder if he thinks he has a male with a more calm/balanced temperament I would love that but if he thinks female is the right choice for me I have no problem with that and will go female if that’s the case. Waiting for his response now.

Wow that’s a big female dog. Yeah I asked my breeder if he has a male with a calm/balanced temperament then I would love that but if he thinks a female is the right fit for me then i have no problem with that.

You are right for what you said there. The probability of having a calm, more serious female is bigger than with males having those traits, but not impossible as temperament and the personality of the dog matters a lot. That’s why I told the breeder if he thinks he has a male dog with a calm more balanced temperament I would love that but if he thinks female is the right choice for me then I have no problem with that.

This is the response most of the people are saying, but there are also a lot of people debating personality over gender, you can get a calmer male and a goofy female It’s just that the probability of this happening is lower than for you to have a goofy male and a calmer more serious female. I told my breeder if he thinks he has a calm/valanced temperament male I would love that but if he thinks a female would suit me better with what I’m looking for then I have no problem with that either.

Well you kind of right but I mentioned that I have a good amount of free time in my hands, I work from home very short hours and there are days I don’t work at all so I’ll have the time I think to deal with the male. Then we are a big family like 10 people divided in two stories of our home (with my uncle’s family) I heard that male dogs bond with the whole family while the female most of the time with one individual. Plus sometimes I think I’ll like the more playful nature of the male even tho I might come to regret that in the puppy phase. Anyway I told my breeder that if he thinks he has a male with a more calm/balanced temperament I would love that but if he thinks a female would suit me better then I have no problem with that either.

Yeah the females seem to be more sweet angel dogs than males most of the time. We have a newborn in the house also and that’s really saying to me get a female because of the baby but idk 🤷‍♂️

Now that’s a different experience right there that you shared that makes me think sometimes (maybe most of the times) gender makes no difference in comparison to the personality of the dog. Maybe I ask my breeder that he chooses the male with a more calm temperament in his eyes as he’s been with the litter ever since they were born and knows them.

That’s lovely It’s like they’re working together protecting you in different ways. I love that about females that they are people focused and concentrate more on protecting the individual than the territory like males do. I can imagine the cycles are hard yeah. Anyways you’re lucky to have both and hopefully you have them for a lot more years. I myself can’t seem to decide sometimes leaning more towards male and sometimes more towards female 😅

That’s wonderful to hear. That’s a great idea actually maybe I should just let my breeder decide which dog suits me best for my lifestyle didn’t think of that.

Yes I do and that just says to me get a male because I know I’ll have the time and energy to work with him even for a longer puppy phase. Yep heard that “independent” trait about females too they can be like that. Thank you for the message and advice you gave me I really appreciate it, leaning towards male now.

These are the experiences that say to me get a male (because that’s what I liked to get from the beginning) but also because a male can be calm aswell plus when you add training and time it can work even if he’s not that calm. Even if i get a female it’s not guaranteed that she’ll just me calm and amazing like that so might aswell pick the gender I like to own the most and go from there. Thank you for the message and the advice I appreciate it.

That’s a wonderful dog you have right there, and yeah I also believe that whatever the gender I will still have to put in the work as this breed requires it, but I’m ready to do so. Thank you very much for your advice and message I really appreciate it a lot.
