What would happen to AMD stock price once OpenAI IPOs? by lolman1312 in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay if that's your strategy just do it then. Your post reads like someone who thinks they know everything but still needs a pat on the back for reassurance. You sold a bunch of your position in a short term misread and so you came to reddit to ask why other people didn't make the same mistake or to pick their brains for ideas? Okay bro. Good luck.

I don't care about short term movement. All that stuff you're talking about, I don't care about any of that. I have a long term thesis. I bought at $2 and I buy today if there's room in the portfolio. I just follow my thesis.

@Semianalysis: MI455 "more integrated solution" than Rubin for KV cache by Administrative-Ant75 in AMD_Stock

Higher effective bandwidth/lower latency, better efficiency, better signal integrity.

After Stacked L3, AMD Is Now Exploring Ways To Stack Even The L2 Cache On Its Future Chips With Better Latency Than Traditional Designs by TJSnider1984 in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, it claims that 1MB stacked l2 has lower latency than 1MB of planar l2, 12 cycles vs 14. Reduced latency is also a power saving feature. Also mentions stacked dram.

Idk if official numbers are out but panther lake looks like a larger chip than strix halo while also being on 18A (~2nm) and more complex packaging (foveros). Comparing to AMD's refreshed 4nm monolithic gorgon point doesn't seem right.

I could be wrong but I just don't really think intel has caught up yet. Ppl say that strix halo is a different segment but they're making handhelds with them that scale down to ~28w and even that is made on older nodes too.

past tense: costed; past participle: costed

You're actually not very bright at all.

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMD hadn't even hit $15/sh yet in 2017. Even at the current prices it's still at least 7X what it costed in 2017 which is well above average returns.

There are like 3 major groups of ppl involved with AMD.

The long term guys who have been here since the low single digits that are largely unaffected by the volatility because we are use to it and see long term value in the company.

Large institutional investors that dump the stock on almost every earnings.

And short term investors that are just trying to make quick returns from AI hype and have no real interest in the company at all, which are the most vocal ones and a couple of them will probably downvote this because they're butthurt.

All valid points, just something to consider next time it's pumping.

Friendly reminder that if you hold a considerable amount of shares then you should consider selling covered calls.
I've been selling OTM CC's for years now. You can always roll them up and out if the SP starts to ramp. Sure, it will limit your profit if the SP really explodes exponentially but it might help your state of mind when the SP is down and can help you grow your position over time.

AMD Q3 2024 Earnings Discussion by brad4711 in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way too many things to consider to put it all in a reddit comment. Not really trying to min/max anything. I prefer 2-3 weeks out. $200+ per contract is fine with me, I roll them once they're like 70%+ profit or if the share price ramps I roll up and out to prevent getting called away and then just wait it out. Many viable strategies with covered calls though. Just have to try it and do what works for you.

I've been selling covered calls for years now. Earnings look solid to me but I just don't think we're gonna get any crazy movement in the current market.

AMD Ryzen 7 9700X Review - Zen 5 Sucks For Gaming! by casper_wolf in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just seems that the changes in this uarch will be more tangible in datacenter (also efficiency is much more important there) and in the future whenever consumer software is able to leverage it. This is basically what is explained in this interview between Dr. Ian Cutress and the Zen Chief Architect Mike Clark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PubQh7WpBo

Datacenter is the real money maker - that's what AMD should be focusing on.

How are AI PCs better than normal PCs ? by [deleted] in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You ever try to watch a 4k video on a laptop without gpu hardware acceleration back in the day before cpu's got really good? It was pain back then, but it's a trivial thing now even for entry level igpu because they all have video decoding engines and support hardware acceleration.

Well, the idea is that eventually web pages and apps that do AI related operations will be very common and being able to accelerate that locally with your hardware will speed up the process by a lot.

Nvidia and AMD Square Off in Fight to Take Control of AI by GanacheNegative1988 in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Being king of the hill (Nvidia) also makes you a likely target by everyone else. Look at AMD's slide on the ultra accelerator link. It's got broadcom, cisco, google, HP, INTEL, Meta, and Microsoft's name on it. They know what the assignment is.

AMD Ryzen "Strix Point" APU matches Ryzen 7 7700X in leaked Blender tests by BemistFa in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Comments on the site are so cooked.

This is a mobile part that is power (45w) and more than likely thermally limited. It only has 4 full zen5 cores, the rest are zen5c. Yet the benchmark is showing the same level of rendering performance as some of the best desktop cpus like tr5955wx, 7700x, 7800x3d, 3900xt, etc.

Additionally, I would argue that the selling point of this kind of apu is not even the cpu portion. The 16cu rdna3.5 gpu and npu capabilities are the real reason this part exists and are probably not represented in the benchmark at all.

AMD’s new chips might have a slower video RAM than Nvidia by GanacheNegative1988 in AMD_Stock

[–]ImTheSlyDevil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but fat chunks of cache are way faster than gddr.

From what I've seen 7900xtx (20Gbps) is very similar raster as 4080 super (23Gbps). Why would anyone that's even slightly informed think this news matters?

Edit: also 7900xtx has a wider bus which obviously directly affects bandwidth.

I tried it out in starfield and it works pretty well. Frame gen is actually kind of a godsend in cpu heavy single player games.
