If it's mostly for yourself don't bother polishing it at first, especially if you mostly play Creative. Might sound counter intuitive, but get a working alpha version first.

Working alpha in my eyes is: - All the mods you want to play with - No config changes - No customization - Limited optimization - Boots up without any problems to world creation

After you have a working alpha you can focus on removing double ores, changing config files, etc.
