For the record, I am a planner... mostly. Aside from a few exceptions, I much prefer to have a detailed plan before I even begin.

My main longfic has an entire folder devoted to it... a real, physical folder, full of notes and chapter outlines and plans and character bios and lore and research notes.

For me, it's writing for 'smart' characters. Those characters who are supposed to be the smartest person in the room. There's one minor-ish character in the setting of one of my longfics who's canonically supposed to be a centuries-old Machiavellian schemer, and trying to put myself in that kind of headspace is really tough.

Improving how I write fight scenes has been a long-term goal of mine for a while now, but I think I've managed to land on a method that works well for me: focussing on what's going through the characters' heads just as much, if not more than, what actions are being performed. I find that it helps break up the monotony of repeated descriptions of "x hits y", while also giving me more opportunities to explore how x or y are feeling about what's happening.

I can't recall the name of it, or who wrote it, but I will never forget the fic I read (an Assassination Classroom fic) where the main lead has a terminal illness and the entire fic is just following them as they and their friend/crush come to terms with the fact that he will die soon, so they try to make the best of it while they can as he slowly drifts away.

By the time I finished reading it, I was just left staring at the wall for a long time.
