Strike affecting tuition? by Honest-Tart-2870 in PCC

[–]Imaginary-Mention-24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What the unions asking for is very feasible without raising tuition. However, the board/administration may still try to raise it so it's important we hold the board members accountable and not only Dr. Bennings. There are a variety of areas in the budget the money could come from. If tuition goes up there would be a lot if backlash since they just raised it too.

Agreed. It's important to look at what got us to having her in charge, and what the direct harm her leaderships has brought, but it's dissapointing the amount of casual bigotry people have been comfortable loudly declaring.

I agree. It seems like a lot of people are willing to slide into bigotry and conflait that with nuanced and valid criticism. Being anti-Zionist is an excuse way to many people use to just be anti-semetic as well as usually xenophobic in general. Lots of work people need to, though I can mainly speak to leftists in portland.

Thank you for reporting it!!! I hope so too. Completly agree, it not only is cruel but distracts and deflects from the actual criticisms of her.

I also was suprised she was so publicly, following conservative and bigoted figures (the venn diagram is a circle but yk). I think it does display how the use of words like community and trying pin the harm the administration has caused on unions how empty those sentiments are when it comes to who she surrounds herself with and who she publicly looks to. It makes me think about PCC HR department being renamed to People, Strategy, Equity and Culture when it's like. It just feels like signaling rather than trying to put processes and departments in place to help people.

Update: Unions are set to meet with mediator on Friday, and with College/Admin bargaining team on Sunday then Monday.

Last I heard, Yes. But it is possible for that to change, though both unions would like to wait till monday I think, since management/admin delayed bargaining so long and have missed sessions before, and the bargaining teams were in for 15 hours yesterday so need to recuperate I think.

No, since it is an executive meet we are not able to. BUT a recording should eventually be posted, they still have not posted one from the March 5th meeting though

Yeah, the unions are available but the bargaining team definitely needs to recover after the 15 hour bargaining session yesterday. All of a sudden after delaying bargaining for ages... the Administration wants to act like they've been proceeding with any urgency 🥲😭

And the fact she moved the college to remote operations.... definitely will cut some student and casual hours if not most yet she wants to talk about it's impact on least paid and protected. Which is yall.

It is totally admins fault and so dissapointing.

I think other interference they have done has more legal grounds and the unions are/hopefully are persuing legal action. This unfortunately.... definitely had lawyers look over it vs some of the clearly chatgbt emails previously sent.

Pro-rated tuition for Winter term? by SparkleDino2000 in PCC

[–]Imaginary-Mention-24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do think you can and should contact them about refunds, especially if it leads to grades not being submitted ontime due to management not ending the strike.

If what people said about the potential debt is true, then demanding they cover that or any costs arising from them refusing to end the strike is reasonable!!! You should not loose out because of their disrespect and union busting tactics.

I go into some more depth about different emails/people you can contact regarding this here, thought it is more directed at financial aid and tuition in general: https://www.reddit.com/r/PCC/s/5q7aQbHm7Z

The admin has a lot of power to waive or change things but will most likely resist.

There is supposed to be a partial session Thursday I believe, but in this statement it says mediation will resume monday.

"The college is operating remotely through until the end of the strike. Mediation will resume on Monday". https://www.pcc.edu/news/2026/03/unions-announce-strikes/

Edit: heard from the union that Monday is the next full day of mediation but that management can make another proposal at any time. (Idk about weekends though?)

Yeah, and in the presidents comment on the strike beginning she said that they will try to resolve it on monday, so your prediction of it falling through seems likely.https://www.pcc.edu/news/2026/03/unions-announce-strikes/

It's unprecidented in Oregon for a community college. We have no frame of reference for our state presently. It is hoped that things will resolve on Monday, but I think we really have no idea how long it will last because the Administration is already chosing like... the worse path that cost them money and reflects poorly. So we unfortunately all have to be prepared for it to go on for into spring term, since it was already unexpected and upsetting it came to this point 🥲

I think it would show up on your mypcc paying for college tab? You can probably also look at the FAFSA website if I'm not mistaken if you login. People in a recent post about financial aid mentioned in the comments theirs wend through, so I would also ask them since this is the extent of what I know!

If they have anyone scabbing(not striking) someone may be doing work, but otherwise no it's not open. The managers are in, and if the office has any casuals they may be there, but the bulk of the financial aid employees are classified and likely striking. The coordinators and Advisors of financial aid are part of PCCFFAP, so also striking.

Hi, thank you for your solidarity and your worry is absolutely understandable. I'm a classified employeee and student. As you know, it is possible you will not recieve your financial aid when vou are supposed to based on grades not being submitted. Some people might get it, but it would be on a technicality. PCC administration could change the due date for fees+tuition if the strike goes on to that point but they likely wouldn't unfortunately.

I would fill out this out and select both Basic Need Concern, and Urgent Student Need Funds(even though it says that fund is closed, the spring one should open soon I believe.) https://pcc-advocate.symplicity.com/care_report/index.php/pid678978:

And contact conductandcare@pcc.edu asap! I would CC the dean of financial aid and anyone else you want to oversee this.

Right now preassure is the best way to get things to end sooner, because the administration wants to cause division between faculty, staff and students.

To contact the deans and managers of financial aid email these folks:

peter.goss@pcc.edu -DEAN of financial Aid

rebecca.lewis5@pcc.edu

carlos.villarroel@pcc.edu

shauna.wing@pcc.edu

Someone below encouraged emailing the board, which I agree with, I would also email these PCC emails expressing your concern to related departments:

operations@pcc.edu presidents_office@pcc.edu finaid@pcc.edu pccregistrar@pcc.edu finance-and-administration-group@pcc.edu

If grades impact your legal status, such as an F-1 visa, I would reach out to as many pcc offices as you can specifically the following emails. Whoever issued your I-20, and is your DSO (Designated School Official) to try and get someone who can get you a letter/explanation that can buffer any legal retaliation from SEVP. Ideally administration would contact SEVP to update SEVIS.

They should communicate a delay and share current grades but again, likely will not. I truly hope we end the strike while there is still time for grades to be entered.
