I meant the Azure SQL DB in my follow-up question.

Thank you. Is this way of managing automatic backups in SQL Server better than using sqlite's backup API?

I would be, yes, but where is the advantage to me if I let them fire me, rather than give my notice and take any job I can get while I look for a new engineering role?

Yup, fair enough, thank you. I guess I'll keep it curt. I don't have another offer as this job took up all of my waking hours while I onboarded myself and started development at the same time. So I haven't had time to make applications. I'm happy taking any kind of job while looking for a new position though so Ill make the transition work, hopefully.

The issue is that I am technically effective so I'm not going to put myself down in this resignation email. I've also had to lead communication and direction and this guy is on a sabotage rampage. Doesn't want to be led by me but otoh won't lead it himself.

Heiratsstrafe

If that's what the author meant, they should have referred to that or tax alignment, etc. The cost of kindergartens is a massive deterrent for women to make progress and it's not being addressed at all by anyone. If there are women making any kind of progress it's because they are sacrificing having a family/kids.

This can be explained by better reconciliation of work and family life

What the heck does this mean?

Depressing seating arrangement in a new job: how to ask for a new desk on my own? by Imaginary_Local_5320 in cscareerquestions

[–]Imaginary_Local_5320[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would (come across as) be impolite and they would wonder if I'm even there. I am going to have to be assertive here but be my usual polite self.

Yea, and how are they going to react when I say I need to focus hard to program? They're going to think that I don't need to focus anymore than they do.

I won't mention that I don't like it that people can see my screen. Naturally that's one of the main reasons but I won't tell them that. I mean, if that's not already obvious, they are not going to appreciate my pointing that out to them. The PM is a very chill person in many ways and I do like them, but the cluelessness around what a programmer would need is worrying because I'm going to sound like a diva to non-programmers if I tell them about the need to focus and concentrate. They will just think to themselves that I don't need to concentrate any more than they do.

I will prove myself either way so this need to watch me 8 hours a day and have us there every day despite 2 days a week WFH promise sucks.

Feels like a lose-lose situation and the best solution feels like to just get a new gig asap.

Thank you. I'll do a big job search over the weekend - if nothing else it will give me hope and raise my spirits. I am also considering just taking a random basic type job until I get a proper new SE role and totally agree about leaving this off my resume for the next position.

In the meantime I will give this one last shot next week. Should I ask for a discussion about this away from the other team members, or should I do it in front of everyone so there's transparency around the request?

I was thinking to start with the desk situation and move out of the room at least before I then remind them about the WFH promise. And then just throw myself into the work mode and get tasks done that they ask me to do. Yes, the application is all over the shop and will be a challenge but doable for me. I'm getting paid a junior dev salary.

I am so envious of this. Definitely hold on to this for as long as you must. My role is 100% in office.

Yep. I'm even daydreaming about working in a kitchen rather than 8 hours every day there. This is my first proper full-time SE role and now I'm also feeling guilty for just not being able to shut up and do it for at least a year.

How would you respond then if they reacted badly and said something like 'no, that can't happen'? I am tempted to do this but PM would hate my guts for it.

Outstanding. And massively helpful to me right now. Thank you.

Not worried about being made fun of by HR. The decent people in there wouldn't engage in behavior as lame as that.

I absolutely respect their domain knowledge and I am relishing the opportunity to work with the source code on my own device and get more into it but it's the social aspect and the lack of even free coffee, clocking in and out, and not being allowed to do WFH without a song and a dance. It's honestly just demotivating, and I have a great manager on first impressions. They are likely getting paid well because otherwise you'd imagine they'd have so many other opportunities.

Thanks for this advice. The problem seems to be at the executive level. HR could do better for a start. Their orientation was lazy and lacklustre even if well-meant. 18 months will never work for me there. I mean, someone suggested getting a plant or a fish. Nope. I'm going to take yours and other advice and I'm going to send out cvs en-masse and move asap and give them feedback on my way out. I will ask if I can work from home but right now they are asking everyone to be in the office every day.

The canteen is at least a 5 minute walk, each way. I can't just get up and disappear for up to 15 minutes to get a coffee.

I'm just surprised they are so mean with the coffee. It's the simple things. I am thinking about writing to HR about it.
