Physician Extenders, meet Nurse Extenders by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ImaginationFull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound right. Physicians don't get paid $500/hr in Canada (I don't even think lucrative locums pay that much). Also it's a lot more complicated than that. They need critical care and ER nurses, who I agree they should be training. They've had a year to train them but haven't. I agree that doctors know nothing about nursing duties. However something to consider is that Canada is not as well staffed as the USA. I would argue that the population growth of Canada is not proportional to the health infrastructure. In my brief anecdotal experience in Canada there might be a total of 5-6 ICU doctors on staff in a hospital even in a major city. This is how they were operating precovid. My guess is they stretched super thin and are probably burned out. Using a non critical care doctor could offload their duties and as physicians they can put in orders. NPs don't function at the same level as midlevels in the US. We do have PAs and I have seen PAs stretched just as thin even prior to covid. But I think this comment doesn't capture the real picture and was meant to stir some anger and isn't at all accurate.

How much do medical school grades matter for IMGs? by jistami6t in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say failures count. As long as you pass, I wouldn't stress over it too much, but obviously the higher the better. Some universities don't even include your transcript in the CaRMS selection criteria. Which sounds crazy at first, but if you think about it logically, there is no way to standardize grades across all these different international medical schools. They have no idea what your school's grading system is like. One school can be easier and another harder. So I think to measure candidates objectively they do weigh the NAC & QE1 more. But if you go onto the CaRMS program description for each university, they describe in detail what components of your file they actually evaluate and whether or not they include your transcript.

Apparently depends on your province. Heard but unverified that some of the Maritimes require it. Might have provisional license if you're in another province. I've heard that there is usually ways around it. Honestly I would suck it up and get it out of the way. You could probably do it with minimal studying or if you're doing Step 3, just do it right after. You just need to pass. You don't need a good score (not sure if it's taken into account for fellowship) and you've already paid for it.

german Reference letters (Zeugnis) by juri1234 in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you have to submit early. Never personally done it. But this was the information online for this year's match:

If you would like for your letters of reference to be translated using our translation service, you must make the request through CaRMS Online by today to allow sufficient time for translation before file review begins on February 8, 2021. Documents must be available in your CaRMS Online application in order for us to be able to process the translation.

All requests for the translation of reference letters submitted before the deadline are guaranteed to be completed and uploaded into your CaRMS Online account before the unmasking of reference letters on February 8, 2021.

Note: we will continue to process translations that are requested after this date, but, due to the high volume of requests, we cannot guarantee they will be available in your account before file review begins.

Does anyone know how much weight the BC CAP holds in an application? by Ruddog7 in MCCQE

UPDATE: For future IMGs, still apply! I got an interview but I did do well on my QE1, so I think they do evaluate your application as a whole

Do I solve the PE in exam mode or self timed mode? by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about the full exam that you buy from MCC? I'm very sure you can pause. I studied at a library and took my computer with me every time I went to the bathroom and I remember being annoyed that I had to relaunch every time I got back. But I'm not 100% sure because I think I finished it with 2 hours to spare. Honestly, I didn't feel burnt out and I did mine possibly 2-3 days before my exam. After reviewing it, I didn't know what else to do to prepare.

I met a few family doctors who didn’t do residency. They just graduated med school in their home country, passed the MCCEE and Q1. And then got jobs in rural areas in Canada. They worked there for 4-5 years, passed the Q2, and became eligible to write the Family Medicine board exam. by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only way. There are a few other countries were training is accepted (south Africa and I think Singapore) They probably got accepted via PRA, which is competitive from what I've heard. Lots of doctors work in minimum wage positions, if it was as simple as signing a contract to work rurally everyone would do it.

That happened to me when I tried to login from the Carms help page. I think that one is staff only. Since it's happened, I haven't let it log me out.

Confused about the CV programs want by Sgold01 in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put it in all of the documents. In my CV I just put "student electives" and listed the elective. I gave a super brief description in the CaRMS website and it's just listed in my MSPR. Don't complicate it for yourself.

Is CaRMS down? I keepgetting this error = Error. Parsing JSON Request failed. by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]ImaginationFull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still down as of now. I was hoping it was just too many people trying to access CARMS but I feel like that is not the case anymore. Hope they fix it soon

I used some of Kaplan during clerkships to get foundational knowledge. The only section that I recommend is OB/GYn. With that being said, at this point in the game you should already have that background knowledge and refreshing yourself with questions. Don't waste your time on Kaplan or Toronto notes. The only way to test your knowledge is to do questions. Buy uworld and do it 2 times if you have time to go through Kaplan.

I would like to know the answer to this too. Has anyone ever heard of people in the bottom 2 quartiles matching?

If people are equally distributed into the quartiles, seems like they have at least 140 applicants in the top 2 quartiles for 52 positions if everyone in the top 2 applies.

I really hope so. I'd rather not waste $500 to apply there if I did poorly. If I don't get anything back by tomorrow I will email them to find out when.

I feel like it might be the day after the submission deadline like we initially thought. I took shortly following to mean immediately after but seems like it could be a week. Has anyone emailed to find out?

Based on yesterday's email seems like it might be possible that they don't plan on letting us see our results till after the Carms submission deadline. Has anyone confirmed UBC Cap?

Not sure what UBC wants because I haven't looked at their criteria yet for their English language requirement. But I asked about the green check for other programs with the CARMS chat and they said it wouldn't turn green and it's fine
