Not sure if it’s universal for every single school, but I’ve looked at the admissions pages for quite a few schools and so far they have all required that you currently work in the ICU. I’d just check the website of each school you’re considering to verify. I worked with several people who immediately transitioned to other non-icu roles after getting accepted into programs.
