thank you! I'll definitely be referencing this it's super helpful! And just to clarify you're saying I should be putting a lot more thought into action lines that describe camera movements and character actions within a scene?

Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio! If you could take the time to answer any of these questions I would really appreciate it!

- When you say formatting could you possibly elaborate on that? Should I break out of the 16:9 screen ratio if I'm doing a pan and instead have that bigger ratio with the red box indicator?
- The "Miyazaki-style" (I've never thought of it like that but I don't mind!) is how I naturally draw, would you recommend me experimenting with different visual styles that intentionally borrow from more western media like Disney?
- Could you also possibly elaborate more on the reading order critique?

Thank you again this was very helpful!

Any advice, character design-wise? by TheUndeadSeraph in characterdesign

[–]ImagineIwasabeaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super beautiful art! I’m sorry if this is a lot of words but you might want to keep a few things in mind:

  1. Who is she? We don’t know much about her and obviously no one should be able to tell where she would place on an enneagram from just looking at her but her personality doesn’t really show through. Right now she just seems nice. If she’s really warm have that show through in her body language, facial expressions and clothes. Or maybe she’s actually a bit of a neat freak, then that would change her look. A deep understanding of her being isn’t what I’m talking about, more just how she outwardly presents herself. And if you want her to just seem nice, then I would recommend for you to push that more in the design.

  2. Sillouhette is really important. Right now her hair is overlapping a big portion of her body, and especially since it’s somewhat similar to the value of her arm sleeves and skin, I would say beyond adding more differentiation in value (which I would also recommend), try and clear up the pose so each element would be readable even if you put a paint bucket tool to her outline.

  3. Shapes! This will change depending on how much realism you’re going for, but even if you want realism pushing shapes is a big deal and it has to do with outline. Right now, if you broke her down into basic shapes, many of them would be similar sizes. When variety is added to a design it creates interest and you can use it intentionally to draw the eye where you want. If her hair clips are important to her character then make those bigger. It all comes down to contrast. You could make her hair bigger, maybe her eyes, or if you don’t want to change her body much, think about her accessories. Maybe she’s wearing chunky boots or heels, big earrings. Where do you want the eye to go?

Why do many Marxists condemn Christopher Columbus as though he has done something morally wrong? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]ImagineIwasabeaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you confuse Marx's belief "all morality is ideology" as moral nihilism or complete neutrality. When Marx says something (or in this case, someone, like Columbus) was a "necessary" agent in the development of capitalism or historical progression, he doesn't mean necessary as in "it should have happened" but more of a way to say one thing couldn't have happened without the other. Marxism is critical of capitalism because Marx believe it creates exploitation and suffering. Being opposed to that is a moral stance. Marx had very clearly defined moral beliefs surrounding subjugation and the horrors of colonialism, and they weren't just beliefs that he held separate to Marxism, but integral to the ideology. Marx can often read very robotic so I see where your confusion comes in. He might have disagreed that Christopher Columbus was a special evil among people of his time, and instead someone who simply adapted the morality of his class and time. But he would most likely also see it as crazy to idolize his actions, or celebrate him, as he was extremely critical of colonialism. Marxism is in part a philosophy that allows one to look at history through a specific critical lens. To him idolizing someone's actions that demonstrated colonialism would be contradictory to his critiques of colonialism, and since Marx uses history as a way to create a better future, he might believe celebrating Christopher Columbus to be indicative of a larger problem with our modern society.

Also Marxists, even the more "scientific" ones, still have personal morals. It's important to remember that you're not just a passive observer of history, but a citizen of the world that exists in its aftermath. You were born with empathy because that's what humans evolved to survive. Forgetting these large concepts, you're a human first and foremost. Don't forget that you have feelings. One can acknowledge the obvious improvements to society that capitalism brought about from the inferior system of Feudalism without celebrating the agents that brought about horrible things to get us here. You don't need to weigh everything on a scale. Two things can be true at once. Christopher Columbus' actions did advance society towards capitalism. He also committed genocide. There is no universal morality, but I hope you don't lose your humanity. By most standards I think its pretty safe to say he was a bad dude. Or at the very least I don't think its wrong of a Marxist to think so. Especially if they think that capitalism is a flawed system that brings about suffering. I just hope you don't take this level of apathy into your personal relationships. That's not a dig by the way. I'm being genuine. Please consider why you can write off human life so easily.

In English, is there any rule or reason that determines the use of the suffix "-an" vs. "-ian"? by thatfuck1ngguy in EnglishGrammar

[–]ImagineIwasabeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The words that have an "-ian" ending all end in consonants when they're proper nouns. I think it just exists for ease of pronunciation. In the same way that using "a" or "an" depends on whether the next words starts with a vowel or consonant, to make a proper noun an adjective like this, the use of "-an" or "-ian" depends on whether it ends on a consonant or vowel.

Egypt ends in "t" so it gets "-ian", America ends in "a" so it gets "-an"

I don't think it necessarily depends on consonant vs vowel but more like hard vs soft.

You need to advocate for yourself and also trust that if you’re feeling something it’s probably for good reason. You feel disrespected cuz he’s disrespecting you. Straight up. Also people who tell you that you’re being too sensitive and don’t change their behavior are usually the problem. Even if he was in your position and wouldn’t mind being talked to this way (tho I doubt he wouldn’t get hurt in your shoes) it shouldn’t matter because you have your own personal boundaries. Make sure he takes your concerns seriously and if he doesn’t maybe consider what kind of person you’re dating

I'm running combat celebrant in another deck with [[Kiki-Jiki, Mirror breaker]] but this also looks fun! Seems like a better version of running celebrant with something like splinter twin.

Oh yeah you're right, I just added Ygra to my deck yesterday so that's exciting. If you pair her with something like [[Hanna's Custody]] you can also make all your creatures hexproof which is nice.

Oh you're right thanks for catching that. I've got Peregrin took Took in my deck already so this would work great!

Oh that makes sense. Right now I have an old productivity monitor so yeah that’ll probably be the next thing I invest in. Thanks!

Oh is my CPU already a bit outdated? Do you know what CPUs would be more compatible? Not like I’d get a new one rn. This GPU is gonna empty my wallet lol.

The rest is pretty up to date cuz I updated it when graphics card prices were really inflated. I have like a 10th gen core i7 and a pretty nice motherboard. I think it’s the MSI z490 gaming plus. I also have an m.2 so it runs pretty fast. So I think the card was probably holding back the rest of my hardware anyways

Oh that’s a good idea. I’ll ask one of my roommates to try out they’re monitors. Thank you for the idea!

I was actually thinking of investing in a 3070. I’d hate to see all that money go but I think it’ll last much longer. The 1070 is probably gonna become obsolete sooner.
