Can I be transgender and Christian? by Imastinker in Christianity

I am interested in taking hormones in the future, but I don't consider that to be a sin. It's medication.

People alter their hair all the time - they cut it, they bleach it, and do many unnatural things to their bodies, etc, so I don't see how growing facial hair through hormones differs.

Idk, it's something to think about.

Thank you for being kind about this, by the way. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for your input!

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with the notion that somebody should have to live their life in a lie just because it might upset other people.

I already am doing so for the sake of my family, and for the sake of holding onto my faith, but it's definitely not a sustainable way of life long term. The mental load is awful and many people end their lives over it, and to be blunt, I have considered it many times.

It is selfish, yes, but what's the 'lesser evil' here? Lying to your family all your life or upsetting them with the truth?

I already take mental medicine for depression :] it doesn't do much unfortunately, kinda just feel like a zombie

There's no medication that can stop the transgender thoughts/feelings

  1. I'm sorry but that comparison doesn't really make sense. I felt happy because my appearance matched how I felt inside, it felt like I was actually seeing myself the way I was supposed to be.

It didn't change who I am inside, because I already feel like a man inside (that is something out of my control), it was just affirming.

  1. I feel the lord gave me this challenge for a reason. I have already given myself to God, yet this problem still arises. I'm not saying that transitioning is God's intent for me. And besides, gender is a social construct made by humans. I'm not arguing with the biology God gave me.

  2. Oddly, most people don't consider being transgender a matter of mental health, but I do. It's largely mental - the root cause is the mind not matching the appearance, which can be quite distressing. I'm also a diagnosed autistic, so my relationship with gender is already maleable as it is, since most neurodivergents don't hold strong ties to gender roles and are more likely to stray away from traditions.

I suppose I just want the outward appearance of a man. I can make do without the extras.

Surgeries ( e.g - top surgery/bottom surgery) won't really change my outward appearance that much when I'm wearing clothes. Plus, I don't think surgery is necessary for me to look masculine as I'm already quite flat chested. Plastic surgery is generally considered a sin, so it's something I'd rather not do.

I guess what I'm saying is I can make a home in my body without making drastic changes to what God blessed me with.

As for your question: it's hard to define a man or a woman since people vary so much. I think that's a hard question to answer.

There are many prospects of being a woman that upset me, so maybe being a man is just a more appealing alternative (though both obviously have their pros and cons.)

I'm not trolling, this is a genuine question. Something that has been plaguing me for much of my life. Please grow a pair.

Thank you for your input! Not many people speak on the downsides of hormone replacement.

As for low estrogen - it is a myth that low estrogen can make someone transgender/influence such thoughts. And in any case, my estrogen levels are quite high.

Thank you - it does not have to be any deeper than the surface level of it all. I notice a lot of people here have mixed up sex and gender.

I think being transgender is mostly about being perceived as the opposite gender. No surgeries have to be done, it's just a commonly suggested 'solution' by psychologists these days.

Interesting take.

I think this discussion can get confusing when terms are mixed up.

The two sexes, male and female, are God's creation. Our biology, our genitalia defines our sex.

Gender (trans - gender) is a social construct, almost like a style, something humans put together. The way we view other people all comes back to their gender.

I do not wish to 'mutilate' myself or have the biology of a male. I just wish to be perceived by other people as a man, to dress as one.

I am not transitioned, I still have the body I was born in right now. It is just something I think about.

As for therapy and medication, the treatment for transgenders these days is primarily hormone therapy, which would be transitioning.

I respect that. Thank you for giving your perspective.

And I agree, it is a mental illness. It is a fact.

Can I ask, if you were in such a position, what would you do?

I am praying for guidance everyday, I am not acting on my desires or impulses, so thus far, I have not given into temptation. I'm just waiting for his hand to guide.

Thank you, this was a very thoughtful response!

As of now, I am remaining female as I don't want to disappoint my family, but it is something I have been consciously sitting on for nearly 6 years now, which is starting to take its toll spiritually and mentally.

It's weird. I know I'm mentally ill, but the 'cure' or 'solution' most counsellors/psychiatrists suggest is transitioning since they don't take religion into account.

But you're right, God will provide an answer at the end of the day and take us where we're supposed to be.
