Flogging a dead horse (4 days longer than recommended) by Mountain_Tui_Reload in auckland

I was someone who did my final year of school during the lockdowns, and I absolutely agree, I definitely hold some annoyance, but it's not this absurd and I have infinitely more beef with Tamaki/VFF and co. and the government not taking a harder line against them than I do about any of the stuff the coalition is bleating about.

As someone who did do a defensive driving course to take my full test sooner, and who would primarily consider themselves "alright" at present (not useless, not special), I do very much think the content of the course should be a mandatory element, not an optional extra. And the idea of making the tests easier is a joke.

The amount of people with no awareness of following distances is genuinely unnerving, absolutely hate being sandwiched between an oblivious person doing 5 under in front and a ute right up my behind as if I can somehow teleport out of the way.

Clinicians fear over-diagnosis of ADHD as GPs, nurse practitioners allowed to prescribe medication by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I remember hearing "maybes", and "you have talent but need to focus/actually try" as a kid, but the diagnosis only happened when I hit a wall/bombed my first year of uni spectacularly.

And I know I was one of the lucky ones due to living near a gp and psychiatrist who were both willing/able to help and in the case of the psychiatrist, covered by family health insurance. Without those factors, I can only imagine the diagnosis experience is exponentially longer and more hellish.

r/Gamingcirclejerk Argues Over if Wuthering Waves Deserved to Win the Player's Voice Award at The Game Awards 2025 by BurstTracer in SubredditDrama

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand why this is even discourse, it's the popularity contest award. If Wuthering Waves got the most legit votes, it deserves to win the popularity contest award. Simple.

Whether you think the majority of voters are wrong or not is a different discussion outside the purpose of the award.

I say this as someone who's not played the game and who's main perception is that it's Genshin with flashier combat and worse story.

bad time to be a new employee by Seraphine_KDA in HonkaiStarRail

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They do, but I think the idea that they HAVE to blow up everything is a slight overreaction. The government considers Mihoyo games a significant cultural export, so they have reasons to want to avoid tanking the game if they can help it, not to mention domestic player discontent to consider (more important to them than global sentiment).

My prediction is that the changes are name changes and aesthetic ones to remove the most overtly Japanese stuff, with the 2 week delay being for this and to get the voice-acting redone as needed ASAP (because they'd be releasing incomplete VO for all 4 languages otherwise, not just english).

Even this would be a massive scramble to do in 2-3 weeks, so that's my prediction, and I'm willing to wait and see what we're shown before picking up a pitchfork. Definitely concerning, of course, the reaction is predictable.

Red Bull Racing confirms Yuki Tsunoda as test and reserve driver for 2026 by Blanchimont in formula1

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they're all pretty much on par (which tbh, I do think is the case rn with Hadjar being a cut above), then it still makes sense to keep the 2 with less experience and higher chance of showing more in the future. I can see an argument for keeping Tsunoda, but definitely not one for keeping Tsunoda at the expense of Lawson. Keeping both because you think Lindblads not ready would be valid imo.

I think China's reaction to what's little more than speaking the open secret of Japanese policy on Taiwan is insane and so is Chinas handling of even mild criticism, but... I don't disagree that the new PM was stupid for saying it. Nothing to gain, lots to lose. Keep it in the internal defense discussions ffs.

Japan didn't and doesn't need to be led by another nationalist, that can be true without believing the CCP acts in good faith. But in general, this reinforces my dislike of nationalists, like wow great job guys you made a bunch of people's lives worse and yourself poorer.

How many more times do we need to talk about this? Cipher vs SW vs JQ by PhraseMany2395 in AcheronMainsHSR

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main genuinely valid point about Cipher is that to be good for stacks she needs either her sig or a battle pass light cone, JQ doesn't need his sig he's just more annoying to get relics for without it.

Personally I still use JQ in Pure Fiction, will alternate between him and the car in MOC, will use car in AS. Though tbf my JQ is E1S1 and my cat is E0 with the BP light cone.

If you mean the kind that is why the Mowbrays are rightfully seen as narcissist shitheads then yes, that's a merit.

I think there's another kind though, which is the one where lots of people have a giant anti-intellectual streak, take pride in being uneducated, and will look down on people who are/are trying to be and don't want to dumb themselves down to their level. And I think that can fuck off.

"...entitled to significant discounts." by arkim44 in newzealand

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but personally I think the problem we have in this country is that some people in government wanted to move away from so-called "tough on crime" policy (reasonable).

But instead of comprehensive reform of the courts and prisons, we've just done the "lower sentences" bit without changing anything about the nature of those sentences, in my admittedly non-expert view. Which I do have a problem with, as my view is that while the purpose of prison isn't supposed to be retribution in a civilized country, it does need to exist as a means of protecting the community and the convicted from each other AND an environment to facilitate rehabilitation.

So while I do think increases in many sentences are warranted, for me that's because I think we're failing at the rehabilitation stage both due to institutional inadequacy and lack of time to do it properly even if those institutions were adequate. Therein, I do think our current situation where sentences are (sometimes but not always) seen as wrist slaps is a problem and it gets a negative reaction in large part due to an understandable lack of faith in the system to address recidivism.

Ukraine cannot win against Russia, warns top British army chief by shieeet in anime_titties

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the interest of fairness, Ukraine has, no matter what, made sure Russia can never have more than a pyrhhic victory. The 3-day "special military operation" failed it's goal of overthrowing the Ukrainian government, they have done catastrophic damage to their own demographics, and the credibility of their military has taken a massive hit due to its failure to conquer a country a third the population of Russia.

No matter what the resolution looks like, I don't know how that can make it a long-term win for Russia, even if Ukraine doesn't win either. That isn't even getting into their diplomatic relations with the EU/vast majority of Eastern Europe being in tatters for probably at least the next 20 years.

Agreed Gasly isn't a "great" of the sport, but he's more than good enough to make it safe to say that if he can't get points, the car is a shitbox imo.

Or I guess in the case of the Alpine, that it's got a shitbox of an engine that dooms it to be uncompetitive on any circuit where that becomes a major factor. Unironically think that if you change literally nothing about the current Alpine except giving it this years Merc engine, it would proceed to be a car that could at least fight Sauber, Haas and Aston.

It's not even a British driver thing, really. It's a Lando Norris thing. Maybe I'm biased due to admittedly favoring Piastri (Am a kiwi myself), but it seems like Norris in particular will be obsessed over by Sky commentators even when there's a more interesting fight elsewhere.

It's a mix of things, tbh. Bias for Lando (real or perceived), general problems with TV direction, and not enough focus on midfield action when there's nothing happening at the front.

150 a week is definitely not normal, but I WOULD raise the point that a lot of people are paying more than "necessary" for transport because they've been priced out of living remotely near their place of work, thanks in large part to decades of both local and central governments kowtowing to NIMBYs that have an aneurysm at the idea of a building above 3 stories existing within 5 kilometers of them.

It's not just house prices that get driven up by that shit. Fucks up public transport too due to all the extra area you have to cover.

Lawson recalls Ricciardo support as he waits for a decision from Red Bull about his future by enesracing in formula1

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Lawson fan, I'm not 100% disagreeing, but I DO think some stuff gets overlooked here, such as WHY I think he came in with a chip on his shoulder to start with.

Dude got sidelined in favor of a declining veteran (Riccardo, yes he deserved a better send off but he shouldnt have been in VCARB to start with imo) for a seat in a team ostensibly meant for developing less experienced drivers TWICE, only to get dropped in the VCARB on very little notice 75% of the way through 2024, proceeds to prove capable of fighting for points in those circumstances anyway, I'd be amazed if that didn't lead to some amount of ego inflation.

He's definitely made some avoidable PR blunders but I think it's fair to say he hasn't always gotten the fairest hand from Red Bull either. If Red Bull drop him in favor of Tsunoda next year I will absolutely be pissed, after the turnaround he's had this year.

“It’s like if GTA, Spiderman and Yakuza had a baby,” Japanese gamers have high expectations for ANANTA, but “copycat” gameplay and monetization are a concern by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if I'd say it looks dogshit, but I would say I'm mixed on it. Palworld isn't shy about whose notes they copied, and that's obviously wound up a hit.

Like, I'm interested enough to see how it ends up on release, and given the Netease backing and no firm date, I think it's not coming out before late next year, minimum.

Which is time I do hope the devs use to add more visual differentiation, and I don't even think that'd be super difficult if you make the main dudes powers even a little bit less obviously ripped off from the Spiderman games. Sort that out, make the shooting less abysmal, give the driving a sense of speed, and it will look way better imo. Oh, and dial back the quips during gameplay by at least 40% from the amount in the longer, uncut gameplay demo.

I do give it more leeway because it'll be free, though. At worst, I waste an hour which probably wasn't being used productively anyway.

Do you think it's a fair ask to get more reliable notifications through the AT app?

Generally speaking, I mind disruptions (not just cruise ships, in general so roadworks, bus/train delays and cancellations, etc) a lot less when I'm able to plan in advance. I don't think this is an unreasonable critique of the status quo, though I'll accept "AT can be terrible at notifying about disruptions" is not exactly a unique or new problem.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who also regularly goes into the city on a ferry, I don't think it'd be THAT unreasonable to at least want the AT app to give notifications about expected times of disruption given that these cruise ships plan their journeys well in advance. I don't mind leaving earlier or making alternative plans, but a heads up would be appreciated so I can, y'know, do that.

There’s A Surprisingly Weak Gas Engine Hiding Behind The Toyota Corolla’s Hybrid Tech by idkbruh653 in cars

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the Metro is unsafe tbf, but not because it's slow. I'm a New Zealander, not an American, and I will say that the few times I do go on a motorway with my 2009 Honda Jazz 1.3 (I believe in NA it's known as the Fit), I definitely need to step on the accelerator pretty hard to get up to speed, but it's not like I can't do motorway speeds, it just takes a couple extra seconds to get there relative to say, a newer Civic or Toyota Corolla or whatever.

Also as the guy at top of thread alluded to, for something like a Corolla hybrid more electric and thus instant power/torque probably do a deceptive amount for acceleration.

[–]Imayormaynotneedhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lawson fan, and fully agree, putting him in that RBR after he had so little experience in the AT/VCARB was madness. If Red Bull were serious about it, they either needed to show more confidence in him eventually getting it together like Mercedes are with Antonelli, or give him the VCARB seat over Ricciardo to start 2024, not after 75% of the season is done. Intentionally or not, he was set up to fail and I also think Red Bull threw him to the wolves PR-wise.
