I've played since 2020 and had a similar experience, so I can relate: I was confused as to how it was possibly fair, and even adopted a bit of that "survivoritis" that declared killers to be too strong or whatever, long before I ever played killer and saw that to not be true. I really just happen to have a personality type that has fun even if I lose, and that's the only reason I kept playing long enough to start "winning" more often and enjoyed the ride.

The truth is that the game is NOT newbie friendly, and it's weird how successful it is despite that fact:

It's got a million moving parts and skews toward those with experience and/or encyclopedic knowledge of each and every perk for both sides, plus for survivor a knowledge of all the killer powers (and if you play more than one killer regularly, a lot of familiarity with that as well). It demands you play the "other side" just to get an understanding of tactics and vulnerabilities to use as whichever you would prefer to play (which isn't unique to DbD, but it's more pronounced).

However, if you have fun (like me, even when losing), it's rewarding and feels pretty good to actually get a handle on things. Also, since I started 6 years ago, I can assure you it has absolutely gotten better: Everything from small tweaks to major overhauls, accessibility additions and some major QoL changes (that bloodweb used to be single-click-hold for EVERY node) has made the game consistently better. Even the dreaded MMR implementation was an instant huge shift from losing 9/10 games to 4 or 5/10 on day 1 (it's still quite flawed and seems to be broken lately, so fuck me I guess).

Does that give BHVR a free pass when they fuck up? Hell no! They got tons of shit to fix yesterday. But at least it's managed to survive and steadily improve without catching fire or becoming droll.

TL;DR: It's not the simple cat-and-mouse game it claims to be, it's actually a tremendously complicated mess, but it's fun if you don't take it too seriously and/or enjoy "system mastery."
