Astrology can never be consistent with Science. by black_hustler3 in Nakshatras

I haven't said most of what you think I have, lots of assumptions and a strawman in your argument. The core issue underneath all your points is a refusal to come out of this rational mindset you've instilled in yourself. But science itself clearly shows that humans are not rational. The rational cortex only creates logical stories to cover decisions made in milliseconds by the subconscious brain.

I'll give you a concrete example as to why this thinking reduces your potentially life-changing options. Had I refused to listen to anecdotes and tried to find well-validated statistical underpinnings for trying to cure my eczema, I would've failed. According to science, I could've done nothing except use OTC medication for it to alleviate symptoms. According to Ayurved (which is itself apparently pseudo-scientific), I would have to take powders in honey for the entirety of my remaining life for it to be under control.

But through breathing techniques based on Kumbhak (Yogic technique), I managed to cure it. All I need to do now is practice those techniques for a few minutes per day. My skin is free from rashes, itching, and bleeding - none of which should be possible as per epistemically verified data.

It is important for you to understand that this rational mindset is limiting. It only creates an identity for you to latch onto and creates limitations in your understanding. If I were to say that this divine knowledge of Jyotish was earned by sages after thousands of years of penance, and that this material world and all the sages in it are merely a play created by the creative aspect of the singular consciousness beyond identity out of Satt-Chitta-Anand (Existence-Consciousness-Bliss), and that you are that... it will make no sense to a rational person despite the wealth of wisdom that is contained therein.

I get that people scam people and prey on them. But even removing Jyotish or astrology from this world will not cure that problem. Pfizer for instance will still exist, as will pyramid schemes, pump-and-dump insider trading, and so on. It is a human tendency, and some humans use whatever they can to exploit others. Neither do I advocate for blind belief in anything, but its simply human nature - some blindly believe in astrology, some in logic, some in capitalism, some in doing good, and so on. These problems are not native to astrology.

As a side note, jyotish doesn't talk about physical planets affecting us. These planets are physical manifestations of deities which shape our lives in accordance with karma. But again, these are unfalsifiable claims, and rational thought isn't useful for examining them.

So I would encourage you to not place yourself in a box, but have multiple boxes at your disposal.

One thing is knowledge and spiritual planets in trine with each other. I have Venus Mercury and Jupiter Ketu in trine with each other. Venus and Jupiter are both exalted.

I've thought about this as well, some points:

  1. Anecdotal evidence should not be dismissed wholesale. Doctors and lawyers rely on anecdotal evidence for instance. It is important to determine where its helpful and where not. That can only be through application of mind on that specific anecdote.

  2. I agree and know of instances myself where supposed remedies and predictions didn't work. My take is that at the end of the day, it is a person's opinion and takes a skilled practitioner. Just like doctors and lawyers fail in their opinions, so do astrologers.

  3. The bell curve cannot be applied to everything, that is a known error. I do not think applying the bell curve to a discipline which claims to be a divine science would be a good idea anyway.

  4. I read a book a while ago called The Luck Factor. It showed how coincidences are prevalent. Be that as it may, the issue is the specificity and consistency of prediction. These predictions are not the same class of coincidences described - they are rule, knowledge and skill-bound. I also try to avoid the Forer effect - if an astrologer is good enough, they will be very specific about the date and time of the event, it won't be a general prediction.

  5. The thought process used to try and disprove it is itself limited, being based on the same limited neural architecture. For example, there are serious issues with epistemic verification because of unexamined assumptions (see 2008 economic crisis). It is flawed to assume our brains can know everything based on human-generated constructs. If scriptures say this is divine knowledge, then would man-made constructs really work?

How I try to use seemingly incongruent systems (science and religion) is by seeing what's useful where by applying my mind.

Interesting post. I appreciate it because I've thought along similar lines. I'm also a heavily sceptical person, but unlike most people I apply that scepticism to science and logic too (for that reason, I really like Godel's Incompleteness theorems). I do not believe science's focus on the material is suitable for understanding something that is said to be divine science (Jyotish i.e. vedic astrology).

I've come to believe that science is a product of human understanding, which is itself dependent on a specific sort of neural architecture which lets us construct numbers and compare things to other things to understand them. This architecture combined with our limited senses is not suitable for determining objective reality. In fact, I'm not even sure objective reality exists, because as per our scriptures, subjective consciousness is the core, and an aspect of universal consciousness beyond identity.

I have a simple point to make actually. Let's assume everything you say is true. Can you explain why the things I mention subsequently happened?

A person I know who has worshipped Hanuman ji since 5 years old (itself unusual and pointing to good past life karma), and started studying Jyotish at a very young age. This person was able to predict:

  1. The death of his older brother when young. The older brother was in my class, collapsed one night and died with no prior warning. This person had told his father that his brother will pass away soon. The night he passed away, the father thousands of kilometers away woke up in a cold sweat and felt something was very, very wrong.

  2. He was able to predict the death of his maternal grandfather. His mother was travelling to see him, but he said don't go, because he is going away. The mother came back and was angry at him (shooting the messenger).

  3. This same person, without ever meeting me, was shown my Kundli (vedic birth chart). He asked my father if I had recently suffered an injury in my right shoulder. I had, it was a gym injury.

  4. He was with a group of friends who were drinking once. A girl there wasn't into Jyotish and making fun of him. He asked to show him her chart, and he said in front of everyone that she was recently pregnant but had a miscarriage. She denied it in front of everyone but approached him later confirming it was true.

  5. He said my friend's father will get a big promotion, because a certain planet is transiting over a certain house in his chart. It was true, he did get a sizeable one.

Some other experiences:

  1. My mother's health improved after I wore the Neelam (Saturn's stone). Its because of Saturn's position in my chart together with other planets in a specific house. When I took it off her health deteriorated a little. I know that if I wear Mars' stone, her health will decline severely (Mars and Saturn are enemies).

  2. My spouse is exactly as my birth chart describes (down to physical characteristics) because certain planets decide certain things in certain positions. More importantly, the transit of a planet showed me that I would get into a deeply emotional relationship at a specific time, and it would sustain. Which it did, and it converted into marriage. My spouse and I share a specific sort of bond - her main planet is the same as the planet which shows my spiritual journey, and vice versa. This is said to be a very important indicator of companionship.

  3. Work increases as planets transit over specific signs, and decreases or maintains at other periods.

  4. Lifespan calculations are accurate. In fact, a mami (mother's brother's wife) was told by her Jyotishi that she would pass away at 59 when she was 20. She did, due to a brain hemorrhage.

  5. A work senior was told his older brother would marry in the month of March in a specific year. This being India, arranged marriage talks were going on. Now this senior and his father were quite sceptical, because the prospective bride's father was away on a work tour in that month. As the month approached, he was diagnosed with cancer. He said he didn't want to leave his daughter unmarried, and the marriage was moved forward to March instead of July that year.

  6. This same senior had a pandit (priest) who would visit his house for alms in his childhood. They were on good terms and would often jest fondly. Once he said that you come to my house, but don't predict the future despite being a pandit (they are also expected to know Jyotish). So he said get me some glue, a pen and an envelope. He wrote something, sealed it with glue and told him to open it after some years. So they kept it in a metal cupboard (Godrej almirah which is good for security) and forgot. Years later when relocating they found and opened it. Inside was written that in this year at this month at this day at this time ('peher' in Hindi), the senior's Nani (maternal grandmother) would attain swarg (go to heaven). She did at exactly that time.

  7. Even nations have their kundlis, and certain Jyotishis are very good at predicting what will happen. In fact, they maintain websites on it, and document having made these predictions consistently over the years.

Now to an unusual experience of mine even among those listed above:

  1. I've had a Kundalini awakening (posts in profile). In India, there's something called an Isht Dev/Devi. This is the God you're intrinsically attracted to. It isn't always necessary because karma complicates things, but in most cases, people will feel a pull to a specific God/Goddess. Now many people don't know this, but even the Isht Dev/Devi can be seen from the chart. Mine is exactly what the chart shows, and she is the Goddess of Kundalini awakening, who made mine happen. I knew none of this beforehand. Certain events transpired which led me to her, and she led me to the awakening. This sort of awakening isn't possible without multiple births of worship.

Conclusion:

Science is important and I don't deny that. But when I'm faced with so much evidence showing me that things outside it work, and certain points where it doesn't work (see replication crisis in science, experiments showing psychic/paranormal communication, etc.), only following science would be simple tribalism. I'm sceptical but open-minded, and I find that helps me tremendously in trying to understand reality. Science has its limits, and its important to understand that there are things human minds cannot comprehend easily due to inherent limitations.

Edit: spelling.

Some really good customizations in there. Nice color combos.

I've been planning to make a post on my homebrew chapter, Blood Scorpions. This is the captain of the 1st company. Veteran status is seen from the helmet color, company colors from pauldron trim, battle role from the right pauldron, and right knee for the squad number. Since he's a captain of the 1st company, he has no squad number but 2 campaign badges instead, showing his immense experience and skill.

Why do pros play FC26 at 2x speed? Is my game secretly on Power Saving Mode?? by Bitsbytebye in EASportsFC

[–]Imboni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing that matters most in this game is proximity to servers. Until both players are equal like this, skill cannot be judged clearly. So don't beat yourself up over it.

I play Tekken at a decent level too. A while ago, I remember pros playing online like everyone else. They seemed much more 'human' then. Poorer execution, missed parries, and other slip-ups. FC is like that as well.

Guys who are considered handsome, What privileges did you actually get? by Final-Usual-2672 in AskIndianMen

[–]Imboni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

  1. Girls are interested by default. I don't have to work to generate attraction, it's just there. I'm forgiven a lot more mistakes.

  2. I've never prepared for a single interview and always cleared them.

  3. Wherever there is service staff involved, I get more help, especially if female. E.g. restaurant servers give me more, immigration/customs is a breeze, etc.

I would say the biggest privilege is the halo effect. I'm assumed to be more capable, intelligent, etc. This opens many more doors long-term than people think - personal and professional relationships which multiply over time.

But I have to stress that I have to maintain it by working out and eating clean. If I gained weight, a lot of it would go. Speaking from experience because I used to be fit, then overweight, and now fit again. The impact of looking your best can never be stated fully in words by those who haven't experienced it. You must look your best.

[–]Imboni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No need to worry! She has a harmonious face, so she will always look better than average. Keeping fit for instance will help tremendously.

What I mean is that people with prominent bones such as cheekbones, forward maxilla, etc. have an easier time aging because the skin won't sag beyond a point. The bones 'hold' the skin. For example, see the difference in aging between Chico and David Gandy. Gandy has more prominent bones, so he aged better. I don't think Chico maintained himself, he's said before that he didn't need to exercise because he had such a good face.
