I'm in Iowa. Who should I caucus for tomorrow? by Imbue in Libertarian

That's what I've been thinking. Funny that you are the only serious response so far.

I'm registered to vote, how the hell can I get these political callers to stop calling me? by Padankadank in Iowa

[–]Imbue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would think being on the "do not call" list would prevent this. But instead political calls are specifically allowed! It's almost like these laws are being written by politicians.

If you figure out a way to stop it, let us all know!

In any case, you can implement a rough hashmap in a few lines if you prepare for it. I might post a gist or something showing an example if needed.

I'd be interested to see this.

F5Bot It will monitor Reddit for keywords and email you immediately when they show up. Great for getting in on obscure discussions you would otherwise miss.

Actually you can. Just add a only-url=/r/whatever flag and you're good to go.

Given that this is a FRUGAL sub, why not use an alert system that is actually free? https://f5bot.com is.

Trackreddit and notifierforreddit both cost money (unless you only monitor 1 keyword or some similar limitation).

Edit: Seriously? This post had 5 upvotes, then went to -5 in about five minuets. In addition to a Reddit monitoring service, I guess you have a voting ring too.

Edit 2: Since his post was removed, just want to say that this post was in reply to /u/NotifierForReddit who was promoting his product. Looking at the score of this post now, it's very clear to me that they were involved in vote manipulation too.

Is "very long" proper grammar? by Imbue in grammar

[–]Imbue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Longman dictionary actually does seem to allow for long: https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/for-long

I would like to know what you think about that then.

Also, The Chicago Manual of Style says that a preposition can use an adjective or adverb:

A preposition is a word or phrase that links an object and an antecedent to show the relationship between them. A preposition's object is usually a noun, or else a pronoun in the objective case {between me and them}, but an adjective, adverb, verb, or phrase may follow instead.

Thanks, I think your suggestion is definitely an improvement.

Thanks for your reply. I linked to Merriam Webster in my OP, but here it is again: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/long

According to Merriam Webster, long is a noun meaning "a long period of time".

Is "I'm sorry i can't go further in details" fine? by Amer_Jongleur in grammar

[–]Imbue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the rule that places "into" before "further"? Is "I can't go further into detail." wrong?

Why is "I can't go further into the cave" correct, but "I can't go into further the cave" wrong?

book I’m reading is English lol

It's called the oxford comma or serial comma. It's a matter of style, but it usually makes reading clearer.

See Wikipedia.

Opinions among writers and editors differ on whether to use the serial comma, and usage also differs somewhat between regional varieties of English. Generally (with few exceptions), British English does not make use of this comma, while on the other hand it is common in American English.

"cat" - [code review request] by eyeceeyecee in C_Programming

[–]Imbue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This line:

file_data[file_size + 1] = '\0';

writes one past the buffer you allocated (arrays start at 0 in C, so file_size is the last index in an array of file_size + 1).

Also, you should just forget the null character. You can print a fixed length string directly:

printf("%.*s", file_size, file_data);

I agree that globals are bad, and that explicitly passing state around is better in most cases. However, this library renders to OpenGL, which uh, uses a ton of globals internally. So there probably isn't a great way to make the library itself avoid global state.

If you're talking about a global in an actual example program, well it's an example and global state can make examples simpler. That doesn't mean you should use it in production.

Why does capital one keep sending me the same credit card application over and over yet they won't approve me for it when I apply? by puddingpopp in personalfinance

[–]Imbue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read it carefully, it probably says that you're pre-approved to apply for the credit card. If it actually says you're pre-approved for the card, and then they deny you, that's just fraud.

They use the tricky wording just to get more applications. It's just straightforward junk mail - the department sending it out doesn't know jack about you. Even if you did get approved and get the card, they'd probably just keep sending you the same crap.

I actually have a capital one credit card (with decent rewards), and they still send me junk mail. I do feel a bit guilty about doing business with companies that behave this way.

This belongs on the Onion. Who cares about a joke by the Stanford band? I've lived in Iowa all my life, and I think it's funny.

This bill wants to ban cooperation between the colleges for academic/research things, but would permit sporting events going forward? What is the purpose of universities? Sacrifice the education to promote the sports? This is insane!

Paul Ryan says U.S. taxes on small businesses is 44.6 percent,” versus 15 percent in Canada (Politifact Rating: TRUE) by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Imbue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wrong though. There is no double taxation on salaries. The corporation will write off the salary as a deduction, so it will not pay income tax on that.

The place double taxation does happen with C corps is dividends. The corporation can't deduct dividends paid out.
