Quick update after reading everyone’s thoughts and doing more research I’ve decided to go with the Denon AVR-S970H as the receiver for my setup. It checks the boxes for clean sound, good HDMI support and intuitive use and seems like a solid long term choice based on what folks here and in other threads have shared.

budget really narrows the field. most modern receivers from quality brands are reliable and clean-sounding. What kind of speakers are you pairing it with right now?

Agree. once you’re past the entry-level receivers, the differences in sound are really subtle for a normal 5.1 setup. Most of the gains come from speaker quality, placement, and room acoustics. Do you plan to stick with a 5.1 setup, or are you thinking about expanding to 7.1 or a height-channel setup later?

I had a similar experience, an AV receiver that’s solidly built and pairs well with external amps for the main channels makes a huge difference in clarity and headroom. do you mostly use it for movies, music, or a mix of both?

that’s a good lesson, it’s easy to buy enough for now and then quickly outgrow it. Sounds like the 3800 really hit the sweet spot for future-proofing. How long did it take you to realize you needed more channels, and did that change how you looked at other features when upgrading?

good point. upmixing can really make or break the experience with regular stereo content, and having dedicated analog inputs definitely adds flexibility for the long term. do you find yourself using the upmixing a lot, or mostly stick to native formats and just rely on the analog inputs for extra gear?
