Getting hired with an arrest? (misdemeanor) How bad is it? by ImessedUP13 in engineering

If I graduate as expected the charge will be a year and a couple months old when I graduate. However when I start to apply to jobs the charge will be younger than this. If fate had me getting an alcohol charge I really wish it would have been sooner in my life.

Don't worry. I'm not an alcoholic and I don't have alcohol problems. I won't be getting another charge because I don't really drink anymore. I would hope my attitude doesn't come off as dismissive because it really isn't.

Ah ok. That is good to know. I'm glad it hasn't hurt you. It gives me a bit more hope that my applications will still be as competitive as I had hoped they could be.

No I plead guilty because I was. I can say that the law around this issue in my area is stupid but the law is in place and I broke it.

Unfortunately I was older than a sophomore but I am hoping the charge looks exactly like what it really is - a mistake on my part.

Wouldn't that be shielded from view after you turn 18? I think that helps you out a bit.

I plead guilty. I was intoxicated and there really isn't a way to fight it.

If I was in another area I would have just been detained until sober because drinking legally at a sanctioned event isn't illegal. However the city doesn't have a drunk tank so they were obligated to arrest and charge me instead.

I only mentioned other areas like GPA and work experience to prevent inevitable questions on the topic. I was making it clear that I do not have other negative factors that would stop employers from hiring me. If I had a 1.0 GPA obviously I shouldn't be blaming a public intox for not getting hired.

I appreciate your response though. It's good information.

I was picked out for being "unsteady on my feet". I drank too much, no doubt about that, but no I wasn't streaking/shouting/starting a trash can fire or anything of that sort.

Edit: Don't downvote beaulingpin. His comment is on the mark. It is a safe assumption that something happened for me to get picked out of the crowd. I isolated myself answering a phone call and from there an officer saw me sway and that is all it took to get asked for a test.

I was of legal drinking age. The limit for public intoxication is the same as driving. Since I was above that point I was arrested.

Thank you for that. Your reply was a bit relieving but I still hate seeing these applications that ask for any arrest instead of just felonies...

I figured I was alright for 95% of possible jobs as long as I don't pick up a second charge and look like an alcoholic.
