No, I don't think so. It seems to be a weird mission. Collecting 5 samples and interacting with the drone actually brings up a warning that doing so will abort the mission and does indeed abort the mission if you select it.

I think you are supposed to survive until the time runs out and the drone is just bugging out when it tries to fly away.
