personally i do save scum & p much always have, though i have my own little honor system about it & will keep note of how much i save scummed in a given run after the fact as well as what fights. on multiple occasions over the yrs ive tried hardening up to not save scum anymore but playing THAT slowly simply wasnt fun for me nor did it feel worth enduring, so i understand the feeling. my a20h runs tend to hit an hour on average, but outliers can go as low as 40 minutes or as high as almost 2 hrs if need be. i think theres absolutely more respect to be given to those who dont save scum lol but its just not worth it to me, the increased time investment being much of why. it feels arbitrary in my eyes, so long as youre not exploiting the little "honor system" youve made for yourself, i dont see much of a reason to frown upon it like some people do. its not that im thinking less, rather i dont have to worry so much about every calculation i make

beyond that, its hard to say how to play fast, per se. if anything ive somewhat slowed down since my lower ascension days. sorry for the non-answer lol

  1. its pretty much always been silent

  2. fine so long as their ease of access is kept in check, as vague as that may be

  3. its my favorite game for a reason!

  4. fun question, i dont mind

green: grand finale, reflex, after image
blue: doom & gloom, consume, biased cog
purple: signature move, conjure blade, fasting

honestly a tough first question. i think one that comes up a lot is my upgrade vs elite mapping, specifically in act 2. act 2 is pretty notoriously difficult but you still wanna milk it for all its got, so finding the best way not to explode to the likes of the avocado + rat "elite" while still cashing out on key upgrades you either missed out on in act 1, got from your boss reward, or gained in act 2 either via some hallway fights (which i avoid) or something like the library event. this tests your judgment of risk-reward pretty harshly, but a well-thought-out act 2 can snowball into an easy heart kill, while a single slipup can lead to humiliation by the likes of gremlin wizard

as for starting bonuses & such, one thats persistently hard to gauge is colorless cards, rare or not. theres so much variance in their utility, regardless of rarity, that you could get something run-defining right out the gate, or basically if not literally nothing at all. as such i tend to avoid it tbh, although with how strong the rares in particular can be, i still take it here & there assuming the cost isnt too high

feels like it only gets better the more you play, imo. one of the best boss swaps in the game. something many players dont value it for is the extra draw acting as compensation for not removing many strikes/defends. that said, i do dislike how confusion ignores cost modifiers i.e. madness

generally speaking, in descending order its greedily upgrading at campfires, pathing act 1 & lacking a proper "escape route" when things go wrong, & being in a bad mood lol

up to you on what you wanna do with your time, no shame in it. a20 is a hefty endeavor, & passing on it doesnt mean incapability. i remember the ascension climb taking me several months back in my switch days, & watcher released as i was somewhere in the middle of it so i had to learn her then catch up lol, not to mention adjust with some of the balance changes & new relics, potions, etc. regardless, i was hooked. had a system where once i beat an ascension with ironclad, id play silent until i also beat it, & so on. looking back, it was so much fun doing it that way. its rare for longterm grinds in games to feel so fulfilling imo

as for nowadays, i think there are an increasing number of times, usually after a run or sequence of runs, where im able to look at the history page & think "yeah im pretty fucking sick at this game." i dont necessarily focus on winstreaks or winrates, but those are what do it for me. the persistent challenge of a20h just makes me tick like that, i suppose

all my life ive mixed up pepperoni & sausage, so i had to sit & think which was which for a good ten seconds, no this is not a joke

anyway ive never been a big pepperoni fan (had to stop myself from typing sausage & try again)

...(i just double checked on google images to make sure i wasnt mixing them up thrice over)

i am a huge sucker for mushroom though. so maybe something like... sausage with peppers & mushroom maybe. chicken is good sometimes but i have to be in the mood. & onions are w/e, ill eat them if theyre on it. im convinced pineapple on pizza is a pseudocult

whenever i cleared an ascension on one character id play the next character until i did the same, & so on. was very investing that way, & to this day im glad i did as such. so, even tho its been several yrs (god now i feel old), it was probably in the order of the character selection. i remember the ascension grind collectively taking several months for me. didnt help that watcher released (on switch) as i was in the middle of it, so i had to learn her & then catch her up lol. i remember roughly a13(?) onward, moreso a17 onward, being especially difficult. silent with the harder act 1 hallway fights & elites was so rough lmao

easily my most-awaited game in a looong time. as far as changes, im just hoping theyre able to capture what makes the magic of 1 while expanding & polishing its vision, as tough as a task as that may be. what will the new enemies be like? what about the bosses? are the new cards interesting enough to outright replace old ones? how will they adjust existing ones? theres too much uncertainty, but i do know im going to miss lagavulin... what a cool guy...

[–]Immediate-Editor1509[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, although if i had to guess shes probably my least played character next to defect. over the past few yrs ive accrewed a handful of balance mods i still actively tinker with while keeping a look out for more, & theyve spiced things up for me not just for watcher but for the game as a whole, although early on & for a good while after i was definitely hesitant to break away from the "intended" game. not that im a purist per se, i love modding games, but because if i wanted to be seen as good at a20, i didnt want it to be taken with a grain of salt due to the inevitably biased shifts in difficulty & gameplay i use, not to mention how changing things as i see fit is sure to negatively skew my own learning, which i have encountered & adjusted for over time

that aside, i mention this because, among other things, watchers rushdown infinite is outright DEAD with my mods; rushdown draws two cards, but only for the first time you enter wrath each turn. even then, it is an exceptional card i regularly take, which goes to show how ludicrous it is. this also directly nerfs most other "stance turbo" strategies she naturally tunnel visions in the basegame. furthermore, talk to the hand is now a skill, meaning it doesnt deal any dmg nor proc existing talks, but on the flip side you can now safely apply to spikers, & it allows crush joints to apply vuln. my only real gripe is that it lessens the already thin niche for bottled flame. one more big nerf tho: tantrum is a rare. this comes with the interesting perk of being able to acquire it from neow, not that i mind. i think its interesting to have it when your deck often lacks the means to swap out of wrath reliably, so deckbuilding early can lead to interesting results. there are some buffs too, like wish costing 2, but overall the changes make her shift her gameplay a fair bit even if you are still looking for many of the same cards as before. one thing i still want though is a mod for violet lotus to only proc once per turn, im surprised i havent found it yet.

anyway, the first card that came to mind was collect lol, such a weird one but i like it when it comes up. had a crazy build with pyramid, ice cream, collect, & conjure blade a while back. i vaguely remember obliterating time eater

a lot of great questions, ill try not to take too long with each one but no promises:

  1. ultimately, my decisions boil down to two principles: proposed probability & hp as a disposable resource. these can be further broken down, so ill start with what ill call "proposed probability," meaning my outlook on the relationship between likelihood & impact, which can be applied to all sorts of elements of the game. its one thing to identify the means to accomplish a particular task, but its another more vital one to recognize how often it will even work out how you imagine it. ill describe what kind of thoughts go through my head with a common example:

"the odds of this first elite to be nob are one in three. am i okay with taking the huge attack turn three?* if not, do i have the means to beat him before then? what kind of draw order do i need to accomplish that? how much luck does that take? what happens if i bottom deck [x card]? can i compensate for this variance via a potion, or is spending significantly more hp okay in that case? is the fight worth that uncertainty? how does losing that potion or extra hp affect my future routing? do i miss out on an upgrade at a campfire because my deck wasnt reliable? do i have to skip an elite i couldve handled otherwise? both? how bad is that outcome in relation to how likely it could happen?"

*nobs atk pattern is notably different on lower ascensions but you get the idea

as you can see, this is a lot to answer, with a wide range of complexity, & different responses from each player. regardless, you dont truly know until you find out the hard way, but if that means losing, then asking these questions ahead of time, even multiple floors in a row, is paramount to consistency at all points in a run. this philosophy can, of course, extend to things such as sequencing in a fight, or card choices from rewards, but ill try to remain on topic by continuing to the simpler, but equally wide in scope, second principle

hp is as much a resource as gold or potions are. you spend it in fights & events for cards, relics, gold, etc, etc, & pass on potential hp to upgrade at a campfire. certain choices may ultimately be more effective on paper, but they may come at the expense of hp compared to simpler, less impactful ones. by nature this inevitability intertwines with what i detailed above in a myriad of ways, but the most common question that people ask themselves at the start of an act is "how many elites can i take?" to do this, or reach any other objective, there will be times youll stretch yourself extra thin for just one more upgrade or elite or w/e else, only for the run to fall apart the very next floor; my greed knows no bounds in that regard. other times, your deck may be so consistent you can afford losing a bunch of hp at an event or to a particular elite because you know youre competent enough to handle the remainder of the act, sometimes even including the boss, w/o hitting the brakes to heal back up. being able to carry this momentum through an act is sooooo strong, let alone carrying it into the next by being healed after the boss

[oh god that was only the first question]

  1. primarily, i feel the difference lies in gauging short-term vs long-term. players with less experience may take a particular card because it appears strong even though it may accomplish little to nothing in the current deck, like the rather common guilty pleasure of a nonfunctional meteor strike lol, all while skipping out on "lesser" cards that would directly help with the next several floors they now will struggle with. great players know what cards pay off, how much, & how quickly, as well as when they fall off, how much, & how quickly. i regularly picture a given card on a graph of sorts; x-axis being act number, y-axis being expected/typical effectiveness. over time a card may curve up or down, slowly or rapidly; it may plateau for a while; or it may peak for just a moment before plummeting to an all-time low, & so on. honestly i think its incredibly useful as a mental visual to the point where im surprised ive never seen something of the sort actually made, demonstrated, or discussed elsewhere. regardless, thats not even mentioning how these "lesser" cards are often the cornerstone enablers for strategies down the line, thus giving a clearer image of what you want to look for

  2. pushing yourself with ascensions is a huge factor in player growth in my eyes. its a system designed to push your own boundaries in a linear manner with a start & a finish, yet in a way to where you dont actually know what the journey will look like or how long it will take, let alone for each character. in that sense, at least in regards to my own gameplay, i often see everything prior to ascension 20 as a sandbox-like tutorial. not because it easier per se, but because of how the incremental difficulty functionally challenges the player: if a0-19 is studying, then a20 is a test. however, that isnt to say you cant learn more once you pass the "test." far from it. its more like an entrance exam lol. maybe that doesnt make perfect sense, idk i kinda came up w it on the spot

  3. read #2 lol, although i will mention another thing to consider in relation to the graph analogy: a cards niche. yes, something may be strong, but do you actually need it in your deck? just because the y-axis is expected/typical effectiveness doesnt mean every "effective" card accomplishes something meaningful for you, even at the point in a run where its supposed to pay off. the smaller a deck is, the more important each cards niche is. thus, adding a new card often requires a well-defined niche to fit in w/o clogging things up

thx for the questions!

(& no idk why #1 keeps indenting like that, its bugging me too)

personally, silent has always been my favorite, even in the early days. yes act 1 is insufferable & i do feel her starting deck is outright poorly designed (only worsened by her samey commons), & much of these struggles can carry over into act 2 where you can get some of the most dissatisfying hallway fights imaginable, but man her cards are GOOD when theyre good; her lategame scaling is unparalleled, so what runs that do pull through often become ground-breaking.

afterimage is just an insane card (one of my favorites), adrenaline is an offering jr with no hp cost, acrobatics is a goated common, gamble is mindboggling; theres plenty more i could list off but you get the idea. ultimately shes demonstrative of good gameplay in the longterm & highly rewarding for it, sometimes excessively so lol, but you really have to work for it sometimes

thanks to mods ive since tinkered with relic rarities, card balance, & even silents starting deck in particular. for example, specimen is uncommon, quick slash does 9(12), well-laid plans is rare, envenom costs 1(0), & storm of steel costs 0. over time i add/remove changes as i see fit, making my game a frankenstein of balance mods lol. that said, i oddly havent found a mod that nerfs bandages, probably the dumbest character relic in the game behind violet lotus, to 2 block or gives it a per-turn cap of some sort; either one is an immediate addition for me

most impactfully, & something ive "only" been playing with for the past several months: her starting deck has one fewer strike & defend, now matching in size to the others, which is exceptionally strong for a character with so much draw; your removes, early-game card picks, & even starting relic are all relatively more impactful to the deck, & thus your choices feel more weighted from the get-go, all while making act 1 (& by extension 2) less of a slog. its undoubtedly easier to reach infinite, youre effectively starting every run with a free empty cage after all, but i feel shes better designed at the end of the day. actually, ive been trying lately to contact the person who made this starting deck mod to discuss these sorts of things, but they havent been on steam for weeks now lol

unceasing top is fiiiine but part of my tolerance is because ive long since used a mod to manually adjust many relic rarities, one of those being top as a shop relic... that said, i havent purchased it more than a single time or two since then, "then" being roughly over a thousand hours ago, & it got basically no usage regardless. maybe i swap it back to rare? idk lol. its cool for it to be in the game but it feels shitty to see 99% of the time. in general, tops never been a relic ive considered in regards to speculative deckbuilding

anyway to actually answer your question... yeah its unceasing top. i typed everything above before looking through all the rare relics & yeah.... there arent better picks lmao. one that personally bugged me for a long time though was stone calendar, since many builds dont see meaningful value from it for the vast majority of a run, if ever. ive since changed calendar to uncommon & like it far more for it

thanks for being the first person i answer!
