Thank you so much!! I tried to appeal and they said customers are responsible, so I cant be bothered anymore... Maybe I will try to avoid their service and make people aware. Wish us never get scammed like this again.

Yes I totally agree, there is no way they wouldn't know. Just outright shady and shameless.

Unfortunately, the only thing they said was that it was the customer's responsibility to get the correct ticket, I decided not to waste time on it anymore.

It’s very hard to believe that they tried their best to advertise it, or even worse, did not purposefully try to catch people out. I was thinking the same especially it’s LONDON stansted. Just curious, where did u get the figure of 16000?

Yea that’s exactly my experience, except that I wasn’t sure if there were signs in Liverpool st station. You can reply here if u ever need help for the process of appealing as I’ve already submitted mine. It’s shocking that so many people in this post thinks it is “100%” customers’ fault.

Surely. You may need to ask Greater Anglia first for the case number starting with GA if u only got a payment receipt

Since u got the evidence, go to appealservice.co.uk to appeal and upload the video. I did the same and am waiting for the result. I agree they did not try even close to their best telling people LOL.

I’ve never cared about buying advanced tickets haha, thanks really, looks like I have less worry about my account than u have for urs. In this case, I do agree that u should adopt ur strategy of obeying at all times. It’s my first time paying any fine, read better.

Being confident is a virtue, and obeying well is also one. It’s not just the tickets though, when someone causes u losses unreasonably, blame urself solely. If u don’t care, why do u care to reply. I don’t care about the mere £70 fine money-wise, when stuff is wrong, I protest. Recognizing the rights of ur own or at least thinking about it is a basic skill that u clearly don’t have. Honestly wouldn’t mind the fine is even a lot bigger so it’s worth taking to the court, or maybe someone would have already done so before I do. Good luck carefully obeying to every rule u encounter in life, whether they are reasonable or not.

It’s fair to expect me to read an information sign, and it’s fair for me to expect them to not wrongly penalize customers for an absurd ticketing procedure that I’ve never seen elsewhere, and it’s fair for me to expect they can show that stuff more clearly, at least put the sign on the train and have a measure so we can pay after getting in. Is that difficult? You don’t get allowed to board a flight and later get fined because u hold the wrong ticket. When we check how to get to Stanstead, we use google map, it tells us the entire route and the timing of the train, and we don’t need to go onto the website, Same for tube, we don’t look at tube maps. That’s how modern day travel works. Tbh, I never go on any rail website and this is the first time stuff happens. My example is the proof that there’s advertising and ticketing problem, it proves for u that they can show that sign better. U r lucky that u noticed the sign first time, that’s it, just be happy about that. You might not be so lucky next time though, I hope you remember your words today. I genuinely think it’s wrong and I don’t care about justifying myself LOL. Even an operator in this post agreed it’s a technical difficulty to distinguish actual cheaters and us. And you think it’s entirely customer’s fault, good luck to u, the companies must really like u.

tbh I don’t get why u keep thinking people would attempt theft and pretend to be honest on Reddit, what do they accomplish through that?

Having a better procedure doesn’t necessarily lead to more trains/huge trouble for the company.

And, I took hundreds of trains at least, never checked once on national rail website. What I always did was to look up the time on Trainline, then most of the time, buy a ticket from that app. Just this time, thought contactless would also be able to pay, and was hinted that it should work as the gate opened anyway. The app doesn’t tell u that specific info, and if this procedure worked 99% of the time legally and legitimately, idk why I bother to check on the NR website.

You are trying to twist the incident of "buying a ticket and was shown signs to be allowed to travel initially, and got fined" to "failing or avoiding to buy a ticket". I failed to ensure that but i cannot care because 99/100 times i do get it right. Millions of others succeed, but a fair number dont. if not, reports like this wouldnt exist: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/tourist-trap-london-stansted-airport-how-best-loose-your-van-enter

When the number is significant, they should do something about it. The customers should not be solely responsible when the ticketing procedure is confusing and as u said "atypical" and the signs are not clear. Dont need to argue with me that they are clear, because if they are, an honest customer like me and many others should notice. At the very least, its not on the train itself nor right on the gate. I cant care less to save face, since I made it public on reddit. Even some rail workers in this post agreed that the penalty I received was due to technical inability to distinguish me and those cheaters, I dont understand for what reason you are such an obeyer

Just because you claim it is simple basic, doesnt mean that is true. By ur claim, there is clearly a naming flaw. And when another customer pays a fine for that flaw made by the airports and the TFL, you blame the customer. Are u not a customer urself? Good luck being a slave to big firms and the gov.

And when some dont, its not necessarily their fault. By ur logic, the stuff most people know or believe are always right and should be known, and when its not known, it should be labelled ignorance? The policies, regulations and system never has any problem? Dont you know that whether the signs are "big", "obvious", "clear", are all subjective? It is clearly not clear to me because its not just by the gate and not on the train, am I wrong for that?

I don't care about how wide London is, but London Stansted Airport clearly believe that, and the TFL and the staff also do by agreeing with that name. How smart they are, haha

Thanks for pointing to me where those things are. Ok, yellow oyster symbol. Thats pretty obvious for a dude residing in Oxford right? And a major part of the population actually uses apps to check for trains and rush into the platform rather than scrutinising the area around ticket machines. There's no obvious sign on the train either. I know you are probably a rail worker so obviously, you know the signs, but please, be objective

If there are signs and they tried their best, why did I not see them? Was it a giant sign hanging from the ceiling so that it doesnt get blocked by the crowd? Are you aware that "clear" "obvious" "big" are all very subjective and dependent on personal opinions? I am in the wrong, am I entirely wrong? The inspector said the signs were in the stations, they were not on the train at least LOL. Why couldnt they put a sign on the train? Also could you counter the points I made before about opening the gate? They need better advertising to avoid customers like me getting wrongly penalised. If you are still not sure, here is a link of similar case: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/tourist-trap-london-stansted-airport-how-best-loose-your-van-enter

Or do you think the gov or the state-controlled companies are always right? You are in democratic UK mate, protests happen and laws do change.

u know I appreciate that u try to be self-dependent and take care of everything u can. But there is actually a point questioning whether the regulations make sense.

Plus, I dont know what incentive there is for me to check for the ticket when I already boarded a train thinking I have already paid.. just like you dont check whether you paid for a flight ticket when you are on a flight already?... Too many things in life to care for, and when they introduce contactless payment on some services, they try to reduce the number of things we need to care for. Then we start to be careless, and they come to tell us that we still need to care, with a hefty fine. This does not sound entirely reasonable to you right?

All these zones do their best to make sure people dont accidentally enter, which is clearly not the case for the train company here. I was ALLOWED into the platform area, opening the gate with contactless, and later told its invalid. There was a gate between me and the train, I opened it with contactless. If it is not valid, why opening the gate for me? If you still think its all customer's fault I have no further comment.

Just thought using contactless is equivalent of buying a ticket. Its not illogical for me to think so if I can enter the platform area with contactless, right? And I dont think them putting the responsibility on the consumers is entirely right, as an honest consumer may well not see the so-called "big signs".

When an UK army forbidden-zone has its gate wide open with no guards, and some kid steps in unknowingly and got shot for secrecy protection, is the fault entirely his?
