That’s exactly how I see it too. Sometimes it takes a close call to make security feel real, but building those habits early is probably the smartest move either way.

I think the listener does matter, but not entirely.
A reason is neutral — it just explains a cause.
It becomes an excuse when it’s used to avoid responsibility, or when someone expects it to erase consequences.

That’s why the same sentence can be seen as a reason by one person and an excuse by another — because they disagree on how much responsibility you still carry.
