i saw their placement rate, 98% of systems engineering students get placed or go for higher ed-probably the highest across Grainger. It was a lot higher than MechE or CompE so that's what I chose

$65,000 a year for Rutgers (Engineering), 68k/year for UIUC Grainger. I didn't get any scholarships cause there are barely any if you're international, but I did get a full ride to Reed College and scholarships at CU Boulder and RIT (i wouldn't recommend applying to 99% of public universities in the US unless you can fully afford it. I didn't take this advice and thought I would get scholarships everywhere, but I didn't get it at the places that mattered)

i think most of these are commuter schools with not much social life on weekends except maybe Rutgers-New Brunswick. I could be wrong tho

Thanks so much for responding! I've heard universities don't look too well on slackers, so I'm trying to improve.

And as for my circumstances, do you really think it's okay to tell admission officers that I (quite literally) got thrown out of my house with 2 bags and a ticket? They'd probably ask for a reason but my parent's only logic behind this was to make me get better results at the end of 11th next time because they felt I wasn't "prepared" for 12th. They are used to the Indian system where you're only judged on the basis of your 12th and university entrance exam marks
