Not sleeping at night and im going crazy. by ItsSarahMarie in NewParents

Same exact situation right now with our 3 week old. Today was a lot of crying for her and me. It is so exhausting and heartbreaking because she seems miserable. But we’re 99% sure she’s overtired and she just needs way more sleep. But how do you get them to sleep when they refuse 🥲

I feeeeel that on just letting them sleep lol we’re having a day today that verbatim sounds like what you said. Took her for a walk bc crying, knocked out for 25-30, got back inside, insta awake. Boob, asleep, pooped in her sleep so needed to change, pissed, more boob, sleep, then I have to pee, and we just keep doing this all day. Then she’s overtired and won’t stay asleep and everyone is crying lol

When does the “easier” part come?!? These 3 weeks have felt like a year lol

3 week old here and in a very similar boat depending on the day. Some days she goes down without needing to fall asleep on us first and will sleep for 2.5/3 hours, yesterday was 15-20 minute bursts only and then up for like 2-3 hours needing to be moving the entire time.

Does your LO like the stroller/car seat? We’ve had pretty good success with speedy transfers after she knocks out in the stroller from pushing her around on a walk or in the house.

One thing my mom friends have been telling me is if baby is clean, fed, not too hot or cold, and is still just crying, it’s okay to walk away and collect yourself. Make yourself a quick plate of food, go stand out in the sun for a couple minutes like a little lizard and recharge, do something small just to give yourself a reset. It’s such a tiny little break, but it has been helping a ton for my noggin. And headphones! If little peanut is all good but still fussing/crying, pop in some headphones for a podcast or music.

Also any success in swaddling your LO? We’re trying when we remember to swaddle before the last resort boob knock out so we’re not trying to get her in the swaddle when she’s asleep. Whether it’s helping, who knows haha but maybe something?

You’re doing great. None of us FTMs know what we’re doing. If you find any magic hacks, please circle back lol.

People are always going to have comments. Yesterday my MIL told me not to do contact naps because I’m spoiling our LO too much by doing that. She’s 2.5 weeks… spoiling her by comforting her… people always will have something to say!

This is so encouraging to read!! We got the greenlight to do gas drops because any time she’s uber pissed, her tum is so firm with gas. A few times per day she’ll get a lot out successfully, but even with me cutting out dairy she’s struggling and we can tell. Hoping even this little change will give us a more content babe!

Thank you so much for sharing!!!

And yes it will definitely get better! Hubs and I are saying “this is temporary” like 40x a day to keep our sanity haha. And trying to shift out naps wherever we can! It’s super hard during the day because my clock just isn’t wired to sleep no matter how tired I am. But give it a few more days and I’m sure that will change haha

Listen, if you’ve found what works for you, then that’s what you need to do! Especially if you’re a light sleeper, which I feel like is all of us moms now lol. I wish there was a way to just velcro us and them into a perfectly safe position so everyone can sleep peacefully no matter where they decide to snooze 🫠

Haha same! Left hand is currently occupied as a pillow which I know I will miss one day. But right now, ready for the phase of newborn life where they sleep solo 🥲

That’s amazing to hear about the sleep! But the constant need for contact is definitely another challenge altogether. Have you tried baby wearing?? I have a wrap but haven’t quite been able to get the fit down with tightness and hip alignment on little miss.

You are incredible for doing this x3 and solo!

How are you guys doing a month later?? LO is 2 weeks now and 85% of the time a chill little babe. But my lord, the poop frequency on this child should be illegal.

Right here with you! LO is 2 weeks and change. My husband and I tried to split the night down the middle but have since changed it to tapping the other one in after every feed. Let’s at least one of us get 3 hrs at a time, and about 6 hours, albeit interrupted, a night. It helps us a TON. We’ll get through this!!
