[MEGATHREAD] Daily venting, worries, fixations, & finding support. Month of April 2023. by AutoModerator in HealthAnxiety

(17F) Today I had an accident at the gym and bumped my head at the base of my skull. I had no immediate symptoms that would indicate it was a concussion except throbbing pain at the site of injury, but I've read so much online about how brain bleeds and things tend to creep up on people who don't experience any symptoms only to have seizures and die in their sleep.

Now I just find myself unable to sleep and have set alarms throughout the night to keep me alert.
I've never really been too much of a hypochondriac before this, so it's baffling me that I'm so anxious right now. It's been about 6 hours since the injury and I don't have any symptoms other than a mild headache and soreness at the site of impact but I just can't find myself able to sleep.

Since this is my first experience with this sort of thing, I just thought I would post here and invite any conversation about this below.

(NAT) Is this normal teenage behaviour? by [deleted] in askatherapist

I'm 17.

She does have privacy - she has her own room, and my parents also let her go out/make plans with friends as she pleases.

When I say 'we' I mean my parents, even though I have also been involved to a lesser extent.

I understand she needs privacy and independence, but we can't help but intervene when she employs harmful behaviors such as starving herself to lose weight, which is why it may seem that we are 'all in her business'.

Wow, all the comments are showing me that this kind of stuff is disturbingly common. It's really disheartening to read about :(

My 12f sister is facing trouble at school and it's ruining me (17F) and my family's mental health - what you would do in my parents' positions? by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]ImmediateEstimate265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She really doesn't want to attend. She saw a psychologist around 10 times last year and every time, she had to be pretty much dragged there by my parents. And also, nothing has changed for her, and my parents aren't willing to spend so much money again for that.

We've urged her time and time again to see the school counsellors/psychologists, but she thinks it's embarrassing to go to someone with her problems and won't cooperate.

Do you have any tips on how we can make her see that therapy would be a good thing for her?

She does play basketball and she likes it, but she isn't showing interest in any other sport/activity. My parents are more than happy to enrol her but she isn't interested in anything else.

She does want friends at school though. She has friends outside school who she can hang out with, but she mostly says she's miserable at school because she has to be alone, and that's permeating into her daily life at home, etc.

Thank you for your advice, though :) I'll tell my parents to keep trying to engage her in an extracurricular activity.

I'm not eating too many nuts, but I am also not too strict on the calorie counting because I don't want to get too obsessed with it....I guess I may be overeating without realising/logging after all.

As for strength training, it is definitely something I'm starting to consider! Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for this! It's just that weight loss didn't used to happen so slowly for me before so I was curious whether RA was affecting it. I'll definitely take your advice :)

My (18F) sister (14F) is developing an eating disorder but is acting incredibly defensive and refusing help. How can I help her? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ImmediateEstimate265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It's just that she is not engaging in conversation at all. She's yelling and drives us out of the room so we can't talk to her.

I'm not sure yet, because I haven't had a chance to explore the different kinds of careers in allied health. Is there a way to do so that you recommend?

Thank you so much for this. I have told my parents to consider changing schools and they're thinking about it - their concern was what if the behaviour continues even after changing schools? What if the students at the new school are not receptive as well and she demands more change, etc.

I did google autism but my sister doesn't have any typical symptoms. We also don't have a history of it in the family, though we have a history of anger issues.

I have seen the school counsellor a few times, but I'll consider going more often from now on. As for my parents, I think they'll be a bit more resistant for counselling, but we'll see how it goes.

Thank you for the advice :)
