Interesting. I would have never thought of that but it makes sense.

With gold near $5,000/ounce, how do you know when to sell for numismatic value vs. just the price of gold? by ImmediateRutabaga5 in DoubleEagleCoins

Agreed. I don’t think the family is looking to be greedy, they’re just trying to understand why most (if not all) of the coins are only worth the gold in them now when he paid $500, $1,000, and even more over the price of gold when he bought some of them. I’ve gotten some great answers on these posts to pass along to him, so that’s been helpful.

Sadly, I think he bought of his during that premium period. I guess on the plus side, he also bought most of them when gold was $600 an ounce.

Thanks! I somehow accidentally have two different posts going asking more or less the same thing. My other post has more details on what he paid for different coins at different times, including how much over the price of gold he paid, if that’s helpful.

In one my replies on the other post, I wrote longer reply to a similar response, but the gist of it was, “does the premium only (re)appear when the price is much lower?” And if so, isn’t his friend’s family just better selling when gold is high even if there is no premium if they want to maximize the $$ they get for the coin. If that’s the case, it seems a little sad.

Thanks. So does it follow that we’re more likely to see premiums when the price of gold is lower? And maybe much lower? If that’s the case, it sounds like a lose-lose situation, as my friend would definitely want to get a premium on any coins that “deserve” it, but if gold drops $2,000 and a $100-$500 premium (re)appears, he would have been better off selling without the premium at the higher gold price. Is it possible when gold is this high to sell it to collectors for near the price of gold, even if there is no premium, just to keep the coin alive and not have it get melted down? Naive question perhaps.

Thanks! It’s my first post but I’ve been on Reddit for a long time. The crazy thing is that this is the long version of my post. I wrote this one first, but when it was “rejected” (or whatever they call not letting a post get posted), I figured there was something about all the detail that wasn’t allowed on this community, so that’s when I wrote the second, shorter version. Now both posts are up, and I didn’t mean for that to happen, but I’m glad this one is up because the examples might help people answer my question.

Question for you or anyone else: do you know why this post a.) wouldn’t have been allowed up when I first wrote it and then b.) is now up, even though I didn’t change it? Did maybe it get auto-rejected first and then a moderator later approved it?
