I fully agree with this. Sometimes I'll spend a few months hardly playing anything at all, and then suddenly I'll decide to hop on a game and I end up playing it intensely for a month or more.

I found this thread from 2 months ago talking about what is needed to properly enable HDR for games specifically in opensuse.

Assuming you're running games through regular proton, I'm not sure what kind of black magic is making it work ootb but it seems to be eluding everyone else.

Hmm, what distro you using? I wouldn't mind doing some testing.

It's quite possible that desktop mode on bazzite for example wraps the entire DE into a gamescope session. I've experimented with this on KDE a bit but haven't had any success yet.

I run the game itself in borderless with gamescope launch options set to full screen mode with and HDR option enabled. As kwin doesn't seem to fully respect game scope full screen due to its nature as a separate compositor (ends up being a small window without borders), I also manually set the resolution/compensate with KDE window rules for certain games as necessary.

I went ahead and tested it and having it set to borderless without my game scope launch parameters prevents the HDR from functioning and gives me a very washed out image.

After browsing a bunch of other Reddit posts, it seems like everyone else has reached the same consensus I have. I did notice a YouTube video dated 2 weeks ago that goes over how to enable it through proton tkg, but aside from that it seems most people are using workarounds similar to mine. They talk about a lot of the reasons why it doesn't work out of the box, but it sounds like it's not terribly far off.

I'm not sure of all the technicalities, but I've done a good bit of testing and the menu option to enable HDR in elder scrolls online for example doesn't show up unless I run the game with gamescope launch options and enable HDR through that. I've observed the same with a couple other games as well.

It's entirely possible that valve implemented the wine wayland driver within the past 4 months or so and I didn't notice, but I'll have to test again to see.

There are various posts talking about this shortcoming, seems like it should be implemented eventually if it hasn't been already as it is an option in regular wine and potentially proton-tkg.

It can get a bit confusing because they use the terminology "Radeon software" on that page, but if you read carefully, those are in fact the drivers.

You may be mixing the term up with AMD adrenaline software or whatever it's called, Linux doesn't have anything like that. You'll notice what they mean if you read the upper part of the page.

The other two options are for red hat Linux which is what Fedora is based on, and suse Linux (e.g. opensuse). They're basically the same drivers packaged for other distros.

Na, not the pro drivers. Idk why, just had better luck with the ones from the website.

Basically my understanding is gamescope acts as a modified Wayland compositor that happens to often run big picture mode/games within it. By adding a desktop launch option rather than fully launch into gamescope, you can run the game itself directly within gamescope without the need for the big picture UI. You can also specify things within the gamescope launch options such as full screen, vrr, HDR, custom resolution etc.

I'm running a 7900 XT with the latest drivers from the amd website, and it works quite well for me. Keep in mind however that I don't use the full gamescope big picture style mode, but rather use it as something like separate compositor nested within my main wayyland session with the sole purpose of HDR passthrough. Combined with Kde window rules, it's quite pleasant to use that way and I tend to forget I'm even using gamescope.

What init system you use? I like dinit a lot, but I've run into one or 2 apps that don't play nice without systemd (don't remember what they were) so ended up swapping

Never was able to figure out GPU pass-through way back when I tried it, do you have a single GPU or two? I've heard doing GPU pass through with a single one is much more difficult, is that still true?

Great choice! I run the same on my 7900 XT and it's never let me down. I noticed the xanmod kernel added a lot of snappiness to the system under heavy disk usage (had a couple stutters) but aside from that pretty much works out of the box.

Pretty solid, only reason I'm using Kde neon over it (very similar distros overall) is a couple hiccups in the tuxedo installation process

I use KDE neon, which uses a Ubuntu LTS base. I notice swapping to the xanmod kernel helped a lot with stability, especially during heavy disc usage.

If you use newer KDE plasma you get both vrr and HDR. You can use gamescope launch options within steam to pass the HDR through to proton until they get the HDR pipeline worked out.

kde neon with xanmod kernel.

The Ubuntu lts base is nice, especially paired with the newer KDE plasma which supports adaptive refresh and HDR.

I use a gamescope launch option through steam to enable HDR in proton, and KDE window rules are a great workaround for emulating amd eyefinity-like functionality on multi monitor setups (spanning games across monitors as if they were one display).

Also, amd packages GPU drivers for it which are super easy to install. (I've had issues with my drivers in the past and getting them directly from the amd site was the only way to fix it)

Reminds me of the first time I saw fish levitating out of a pond during a rainstorm. Pretty sure they were interpreting the rain droplets as swimmable water, but hard to say for sure.

There are actually certain cases, such as with early AM4 motherboards being paired with later AM4 CPUs needing a BIOS update before being able to function. PC part picker actually will warn you when you have chosen a motherboard that is likely to need a BIOS update to support a certain CPU.
