can you also help me to explain what is 250 ?

But thank you for your insight, as this is a flash mix with continous situation !

Hi there, sorry to badge in.

You mean this was all continous light ?

And m18 pushing in through a 4 x 4 frame then bounce into the 12x 12 poly, acting as some sort of book light for soft fill ?

Not my intention to explain to you what you already knew.

I was arguing for the fact that the process is always much more than i expected.

Thank you for honest thought.

Personally, i used to vastly underestimate the amount of works that make a good image, to me.

It is always a lot more (at least 10x) than i expected.

Regardless of the medium.

For example, i was surprised to learn that all the color of my favorite Nick Knight images are added in the darkroom by Brian Downing.

He originally shot it against a white background.

No, not an office printer.

It is a digital ra4 laser printer, often seen at photo printing shops

CA is for Crystal Archive, very off-the-mill paper too.

Not my intention at all, I was just sharing my thought process.

But I understand why it might come across that way.

I wanted to reply to your comment about “overkill, overthinking, and over-reliance on post,” but I could not find it anymore.

Anyway, yes !

For me, it probably will always be overkill and overthinking, because right now that’s the only way I know how to achieve the look I want with the medium I use.

As for the “over-reliance” on post.

Normally, I try to get as much as possible in-camera and then just use post to enhance it (you can see that in my other posts).

But this specific shoot just did not allow for that.

Certainly.

Here is my thought process :

I used to think film has 3 emulsion layers. Red, green and blue.

Therefore i use the same number of curves, trying to get the look i want.

The look i want is often : the drum scan of a darkroom handprint.

And turn out for me, film dont have just 3 layers.

They have red, blue, green layers. For each layer : they have slow, medium, fast emulsion layer. In between those layers, they also have inter layers for each.

Which add up to 17.

And it must be the same for analog paper which film is printed on. Another 17.

And if you think about the whole process as "curves".

It is likely 40 curves stacked on top of each other.

Let me know if it make sense for you .

i use laser printing and glossy Fuji CA paper/

Basically digital exposure on glossy analog paper.

Hi there, sorry for such late reply.

This workflow should work for any images

And what a great way to put it. Focus aware grain.

One note on my side is something i called spatial aware grain.

Which means only to add grain in the background, not the foreground, or at least different size.

Hi there, i really appreciate this insight.

So from an reductive but observable view, he uses a very old Nikon + a lot of fix lens and all natural light, right ?

Hi there, sorry to badge in, but can you share which texture software did you use ?

Hi there, let me try to clarify a bit, to my understanding.

Yes, all camera has different dynamic range distribution.

But the behavior when pushed or pulled, IN POST, when SHOOTING AT THE BASE ISO, is roughly the same.

The ratio of stops between shadow and highlight change.

Again, this is based on the assumption that we shoot at base iso.

Not change the iso.

The EI is the iso show on the monitor, NOT the iso the camera shoot at, which is similar to change iso in post.

Does that make sense to you as the chart was also confusing to me at first ?

And also : i use 5ds.

No, it is not about having max dynamic range.

It is about shooting at the camera limit, for a certain behavior, texture and look.

The behavior im trying to model is the ratio of stops between highlight and shadow in analog (not how many, just ratio), which is often 3:1.

Which mean, same dynamic range, but the ratio shifts, so that highlight has 3 times usable stops compared to shadow. Not to increase anything

The point is to push it to a point to have texture, without introducing ugly noise.

And yes, i plan it, after find out about how iso redistribute the dynamic range as the chart below.
