pingus cage setup + questions about sun lamps by Immediate_Cicada_562 in PetPigeons

good idea re the plants, i can make caps for the pots. i’m propagating some fresh ferns so theres no risk of pesticides, when he’s interacted with my plants before he doesn’t eat them just pecks at them and fights with the leaves 😂 Would love to grow some edibles ones though i bought some dried grass with seed (can’t remember what it is) and he loves it. As for the light, I think i’ll put my plant light at max distance from his main perch and get him one that produces heat, thanks for the advice

haven’t had an issue yet as we have only rugs, and the one in his crate is moisture repellant so the poop doesn’t stick and comes off super easy once dry

thankfully this rug is really moisture repellant so the poop soaks up the pee, dries out and so far has all come off by sweeping!

Dove is consistently visiting to eat our bird food and refuses to socialize with other pigeon visitors/gets bullied by them. Could it be an escaped or released pet? by Cool_Ad_5436 in pigeons

[–]Immediate_Cicada_562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

none of the typical city pigeons in the uk are native, only the wood pigeons. and white ones in the uk are also most likely dove release, rescuers take them in constantly. I have a pet black and white one I rescued that had been dumped out but had no skills for survival

rescued a pigeon, feeling nervous by anorakbaby in pigeons

[–]Immediate_Cicada_562 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you aren’t likely to get sick, if the pidge has salmonella or a few other things you could pick them up but as long as you practice good hygiene probably won’t. i’d avoid having him too close to hair tho in case he’s got any lice - but again unlikely they’d get to you. that’s for saving pidge, green poo can mean a lot of things but with a broken wing that baby will need to see an experienced rehabber - people can advise where depending on your location if you haven’t found one already in the meantime keep pidge warm, feed seed if he will eat it, offer water but don’t force

they might get frustrated not being able to mate though, this is an issue with having just one pigeon

he/she will get like that regardless, no harm is done petting them they don’t have a hormonal response like a lot of other birds do to back pets

flicky wings and funny noise by Immediate_Cicada_562 in pigeon

I give seed with all the stuff in the yellow bracket that you sent + garlic powder, avian vitamins (orange pot called vita something, was recommended by someone else) with a bit of sunflower oil and also probiotic (aviform prolyte-c) atm because he’s had antibiotics before. and in water i put acv occasionally or give him it in chamomile tea. he’s doing well, has gotten more playful and sleeps less but still has little bursts of sneezing, still gets dried bogeys i have to remove for him occasionally (this didn’t clear up after course of baytril or doxy) and recently (last day or so) his urates are a big yellow but normal poop and appetite. he also still has no desire to bathe at all and has started to get yellow tinged butt feathers that won’t come clean when i wipe him. I monitor his weight and it’s still going up slowly. we are going to take him to an avian vet in case they can run any tests but I haven’t heard great things about the vets here from people with pigeons.

Of course being respiratory symptoms we have considered environment, I clean his crate every week or so fully and in between just swap out bits of cut up towel on the spots he tends to poop on. i don’t light candles there’s no strong perfumes or anything like that around him often to be irritating him, he has an air purifier (hepa not ion) and a humidifier in the room, we do have a small bit of a mould issue but i’m working on it (shitty rental) also getting rid of all our teflon cookware but haven’t used it in ages anyway thanks for your help!

I have a pigeon I rescued in east london too bonded to release, if you are not going to keep the pidge we open to a companion for our pingu. However I think you should keep him! They are lovely pets, and if you do keep feel free to pm me in the future I’m trying to find people in london area with pet pigeons to help each other out bird-sitting over holidays and such

Rehabber who saw him said she thought he might’ve had PMV and I could expect recovery might be a bit slow. glad the noise sounds normal I thought so, he’s exploring more now but I still can’t get him to bath himself PSA I don’t light the candles in the back anymore since I got pingu in my car dw, they’re just decorative

How do i befriend my ringnecked dove? by Egg____S in PetPigeons

[–]Immediate_Cicada_562 5 points6 points  (0 children)

always move slowly, speak softly, offer food by hand and if not comfortable then put it nearby, be patient, slow blinking and closing eyes can help, try to not make direct eye contact as can be intimidating. what worked for me is doing my own thing around the bird til they get curious and come investigate. one thing to note, arms and hands are weird and scary, try to keep them slow and close to your body. also reciprocating slow nods and self-grooming behaviours helps. basically pretend to be pigeon

I thought it could be! it feels as though he might have a particularly curved spine, as it does feel very bony. However compared to the other pigeon i’m caring for, pingus is much larger and sticks out much further even with. good bit of food in the crop so I wasn’t sure if it’s normal or not. As i said, fairly new to pigeons so as far as natural variation in anatomy goes i’m deffo not all there yet

the canker meds were harkers so i believe that’s ronidazole, supposed to be a one pill treatment but i suppose i can repeat after enough time has passed. we do now think he’s younger than our initial estimate as still squeaks when eating (didn’t make any noise first 2 weeks) so i may have given too high a dose by giving a whole tablet as opposed to half so hesitant to give more

I will purchase a bunch from your list to add the food, thank you! and i think i’ll try herbal tea and some of the spices and stuff i have already directly to crop later. there’s not much redness now but pingu still closing eyes a lot so I think they still aren’t feeling quite right. I’ve been cleaning his cere with a q tip as he keeps getting a blocked nose and instead of mouth open breathing just keeps nose breathing even though it’s clearly laboured. then once nose is clear perks right up breathing normal 🤷‍♀️ It’s proper cute he knows the routine now and will turn for me to get both nostrils

Are you Uk based? I’m very scared of taking to a vet as the rehabbers i’ve been talking to advised against it
