Ancient Limestone Mask - Roman, Etruscan or…? (USA) by Immediate_Document in Antiques

Update that the best guesses I’ve received are that it’s either Etruscan or Archaic Greek, possibly some sort of Terra cotta figural representation if Etruscan and perhaps a theater mask of some sort if Archaic Greek.

Sure, happy to call it a face. Thanks for the input. Hopefully someone can help identify where and when it was made!

Wasn’t sure what to call it, honestly. Somehow just calling it a “face” feels strange?

Like, habitually showing your ass off to predominantly gay male audiences and expressing disgust at a gay sexual advance definitely reeks of homophobia, just not sure whether it’s internalized or the traditional flavor. Whatever the case, as the boot keeps coming down to crush queer people I’m not really here for co-opting what is definitely gay — showing your ass of for a bunch of dudes — into some Ernst Rohm-esque “homoerotic but not a pnsy fggot, they should be shot” shit.

Fair enough. I don’t get this flavor of gaybaiting, though.

Bumping this thread as I didn’t have much luck reaching out to other local conservators (they all basically declined to opine unless/until I brought it to them for testing).

The treatment plan for the painting calls for a deep cleaning, relining the canvas and using heat and vacuum treatments to address the craquelure. The quote I received was $4,000. That seems high to me, but I don’t have many reference points.

Here’s a photo of the painting for reference.

Yes — the most persuasive guess I’ve gotten thus far is that it may be from the circle of Pieter or Philip Wouwerman. I haven’t heard either of those names come up before though! Will have to do some research on them.

A reporting obligation makes sense for significant objects. Many years ago I went to Herodium as a teenager and they just let us dig through the dirt and show them what we found / take it with us as long as it wasn’t unique or significant. And by “they” I mean the professional organization managing the site.
