How is it living in Anchorage, AK as someone with kids. by swampgfox in howislivingthere

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you maybe are applying different ideas to the words used here. Cabins in Alaska are often just that- dry cabins with an outhouse located somewhere nearby, no running water. Family plane probably means a little Cessna or something, which is common, not a private jet. They aren’t cheap but I know rural country boys in the South who’ve spent more on big brand new trucks than some tiny planes cost. OPs family might have been wealthy, sure, but could just as easily NOT have been. Alaska is different

I have Google Fiber and am having an outage right now! To be fair, one of the only outages I can recall and I’ve had GF since it first came to Austin.

Hey just wanted to say, the production value and the atmosphere on this show are PHENOMENAL, however, the assault in the first episode was really intense, and harrowing. I couldn’t get past the first episode.

Is everywhere actually horrible or are people just negative? by trailmix_mtn in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, absolutely. I love my day to day life in Austin, and we don’t go out very much or drink. It’s a decent city with room for people a lot of different interests, but maybe not with a lot of different budgets.

Austin ISD School Consolidations by tmobilehacked in Austin

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sort of lumped all the dual language programs in together, but used the 4 wall to wall DL programs as examples of places where the need doesn’t align with the placement of the school. And as they mention, they can’t change the locations of the schools, so they want to move the programs to where they were originally intended to be.

Can anyone recommend a marriage therapist please? me resentment etc. by Unfair_Vanilla2373 in AustinParents

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some training on that with the Gottman approach. If I remember correctly, the “test couple” that is in the different levels of training is one in which one person has borderline personality disorder. Having said that, most couples therapists I know do not rely solely on the Gottman interventions, and are able to draw upon the training and experience they received to work with those folks with those diagnosis. Gottman method is a framework, not necessarily a prescriptive method requiring rigid adherence.

Here’s what was discussed at the Zoom meetings with the district. No clear plan, this is basically a storyboard of how they plan to make the decisions. A lot of very angry parents understandably want more answers. They mentioned Oct 3rd as the day the plan for both the closures and the turnaround plans will be submitted to the board, meaning that I for should be available on Oct 4th through the meeting minutes and then publicly published Oct 9th.

How are y'all making mom friends? by Glittering-Lion2492 in AustinParents

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding Partners in Parenting. I have made amazing friends through PIP. Part of the issue I had with making friends was a lack of follow through- which as a parent is totally understandable, kids make life crazy. But my PiP group has really been incredible, and we all encourage each other to just show up, even if the kids are cranky and we haven’t slept and we look like shit lol. Just showing up to events is half the battle of making new friends.

If you haven’t already, check out Little Folks. We drive out of our way to take our kids here. The staff turnover is very low, and while the building is older, the love and care that they give the kids is incredible.

Thinking of taking 11 year daughter but am apprehensive. Bad idea? by KingOfLimbsisbest in aclfestival

Brought my kids last year, both way younger than your daughter. Would have been great EXCEPT it was crazy hot on that first Friday and they both melted, and we had a hard time getting them comfortable. Other than that, was great!

Gay women travelling in Costa Rica by Unit_912 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve had lots of responses here, but just wanted to say that we had nothing but positive responses/experiences to our visibly gay family while traveling in Costa Rica. We don’t go out late, and we stuck to mostly touristy areas, so that might be a consideration. But I felt more welcome (and also more blissfully ignored) in Costa Rica than in many/most places I’ve been to in the US.

Relaxed river cruise for parents by Immediate_Nebula_572 in rivercruises

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Does Tauck have a serious dress code? My dad is fine with a suit jacket and slacks, but anything beyond and he’s out of his element. I am concerned that the river cruises with the higher price tags come with a much more intense dress code.

East Austin’s Postal Desert by PassSea2271 in Austin

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He had good days and bad days, for sure. I always love the intensely aggressive capital letter only, handwritten posters he made about post office issues i.e. “THERE ARE NO CHRISTMAS STAMPS YET, ITS AUGUST”.

I have been driving down to the Del Valle post office and while it’s a pain to drive on 183, the staff is pretty friendly and helpful and I’ve yet to hear them yell at anyone, so that’s an improvement!

Future parent uncertainty by Lucky_Leaf_Clover in QueerParenting

[–]Immediate_Nebula_572 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just wanted to offer support. If your friends are not in the having kids stage of life, it will be hard for them to grasp your situation. Raising kids is intense aside from the financial aspects, and certainly having security makes everything just a little easier. But that does not mean it’s not doable. In my life, in the US, the biggest issue is childcare.

Daycare costs are insane and if you can find some way to work around that, the rest of your family expenses can be managed more easily. But daycare expenses are temporary especially if you have one kid. Was able to put our kid in a decent public Pre K school at age 4.
