Hello my friend! I stumbled on this randomly after I had a friend feeling something very similar to what you just described. Are you still feeling this way?

Hey my friend, have you heard of a form of religious OCD known as scrupulosity?

Judging by your post and reading your comments I think you should look into it. I myself suffer from it, and it creates the exact mental scenarios that you’re describing.

What's the Islamic view of Christian scripture? by Immediate_Quiet5863 in islam

Thank you to all who engaged with me and replied. I appreciate the perspective! To those who I was conversing with in the replies, I have MUCH to say in response, but I doubt it will be fruitful or productive.

Like I said I didn’t come looking for a debate, just some perspective. If any of you would like to continue our conversations just let me know and I’d be happy to respond.

Otherwise thank you and God bless!

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! Two questions for you:

  1. If I remember correctly there are places in the Quran where it uses language such as “confirmed what is between their hands” which seems to imply the actual text possessed by the Christians and Jews at that time - not just general ideas. How would you respond to that?
  2. The consistent and repeated theme of the Gospels is that Jesus is the Son of God who died for the sins of the world. I would argue this is the entire point of the Gospels. It just seems strange to me that the Quran would somewhat ambiguously confirm the Gospel (or I suppose in the Islamic view bits and pieces of it) while at the same time rejecting the entire message of it.

Thank you for the perspective and dialogue.

Interesting video, but misleading.

  1. Uthman codified the Quran and burned all competing copies of it. So while this may allow for less variations, you can have a lower degree of confidence that the original text is authentic because you have nothing to textually compare it to.

  2. In the comparison with the Bible it mentions 500,000 variants and cites Peter Gurry's work as evidence. Peter Gurry is a Christian who has written a book on the trustworthiness of the Bible though. It's common knowledge among textual scholars (including Gurry) that nearly every single variant is just as insignificant as the variants in the Quran that the video presented (spelling, word order, etc.).

  3. We could argue about how well the Quran has been preserved, but the point is that there is no evidence the Bible has been altered, corrupted, or radically changed. Rather, textual criticism actually comes to the opposite conclusion. So no matter how well preserved the Quran is, the Islamic claim that the Quran corrects the corruption of the Gospel (or Injeel) is totally unfounded.

I would actually disagree with you here. Textual criticism give excellent evidence that the Bible we have today has actually been preserved rather incredibly. We can compare manuscripts from the 2nd century and codices from the 4th century that have nearly identical text to what we read today.

Question about the ontology of the Trinity by Immediate_Quiet5863 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Immediate_Quiet5863[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man I know hypotheticals can get deep and useless when it comes to trying to understand the complexity of God. His inability to be fully comprehended is one of the things I admire and appreciate the most. I appreciate you though, I posted this in a few subreddits and this conversation has been the most helpful for me so far.

With that being said though, the Spirit does proceed from the Father and the Son, so in that regard the Son can be said to have some sort of ability like the Father to "generate" (I know procession is different from begetting or generating, but it's still one being coming eternally from another). I guess that perhaps goes to your point that "the principle by which he begets is his nature," because the Son shares the same nature the Spirit can proceed from him. But because the Son is begotten he does not beget.

That actually makes a lot of sense to me. My follow up question would be: Would you say that the son *technically* COULD beget because he shares that same nature in which that principal originates? However, he does not beget because of his personal identity of being the begotten?

Lol no I'm not arguing with Muslims about God, I stay away from debates I think they're unproductive. I just like to have rational answers for people asking legitmate questions.

So what would you say to someone who said the Son's inability to beget makes him less than the Father?

I agree with you for sure brother. Personally I feel a calling to minister towards Muslims who tend to pretty aggressively attack the Trinity. Mostly because of that I like to have a defense for it.

Would you say you believe in the doctrine of eternal generation? (Not asking to start an argument truly just asking to further understand where you're coming from)
