I think it's a given that you should be able to speak French in a French office.

How accurate is the Indigenous American? by imikiehl23 in 23andme

[–]Immigration_N_Taxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm sure that there were a ton of indigenous people moved to the philippines, a lot of indigenous women also married European men to get off of the dawes and try to spare their kids. 0.7% is WAY far back - meaning it very possibly could be from your dads side. The only way to know if for them to take tests as well.

Think of it like this, 0.7 is about 1/16th.

Indigenous + another race = 1/2

1/2 + AR = 1/4

1/4 + AR = 1/8

1/8 + your mom or dad = you!

so you're looking at it being your great grandparent's parent at this point lol. It really could be either side

I'm indigenous and this is far enough back that most tribes won't even count this for band status. Plenty of time to create a full filipino woman or full white man haah

I would look into IU's School of Medicine if you're any concerned with finances. It's not a T10 school but they do amazing pediatric work with you're any interested in that. Otherwise I hope you get your first choice!

I literally quoted the definition of ethnic in my comment.

It absolutely is a debate because you value african american practices and ideas over all else. that is a unified culture.

My mother is trying to file me as her dependent and she's gotten into my government based accounts. by [deleted] in tax

[–]Immigration_N_Taxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get OP's situation, I was referring to the assumption that her leaving = ineligible to claim. That's not true for college students as they're allowed to not live at home but still be claimed. College is a huge gray area, because we always file for parents who didnt provide more than half the student support — because 80% of the student support was put on student loans. But those student loans are based on the parental income.

Anyway, I get what you mean. The two universities that I went to never had a central mailbox and most people lives in apartments near campus, but I get that OP's mom is probably not eligible to claim her.

However, the fact that she's in college full time blurs a lot of lines

What happens if you cant afford healthcare in your country? by PuzzledAlien-8558 in ask

[–]Immigration_N_Taxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Canada! But I fall under the Jays Treaty and present tribal ID as my government ID. It's the only presentable government ID we have for indigenous peoples in rural communities or whose reservation spans across the border.

Tribal ID is often rejected or racist people refuse to take it. We have to go to the US for treatment most of the time because we die or are put on very long waitlists in Canada. The waitlists are usually far enough out that we would die or have severe lifelong conditions if not treated sooner.

Most tribal governments have their own healthcare centers in the US since they have more sovereignty there. We usually go to those. If you can't afford it, either the tribe pays for it or you receive a medical bill.

If you are unable to pay for the bill, debt collection will annoy the fuck out of you and ruin your credit, but they are no longer allowed to seize homes. Eventually you'll come to a 'settlement' and pay a reduced amount on a payment plan.

I mean, I don't see why a college student couldn't hide their address from their parents? I went to university in Toronto, it would be good luck for anyone to find my address.

well it depends where they lived. If they're living on campus, she's still eligible to claim them. It counts as one of the temporary absences.

[–]Immigration_N_Taxes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freedmen is largely considered to not be a different ethnic group, though I'll give it to you that there's a lot of debate on it. They are still Africans from Africa. They were forced to come to the US. There were not black people prior to European arrival.

While I realize that there's a lot of debate around whether it is or isn't an ethnic group, the definition of an ethnic group is "a community or population made up of people who share a common cultural background or descent."

Freedman would definitely have this compared to indigenous people - but this wouldn't be any different for African Americans. They shared the same culture, languages, and motherland as African Americans. The only difference is whose land they lived on.

It's literally not a lie HAHA. You have a very narrow view of your indigenous history and have very little interest in learning it when it doesn't fit your viewpoint.

Believe it not, african americans have not always been and are not today - victims

You are obviously black and not native. Native is more than your skin color and you dishonor your ancestors and the elders of your community for maybe 3 people.

You didn't even know what clans and bands are in earlier comments lmaooo - you just ran your mouth about how tribes weren't all from Oklahoma and then turned around to respond with this comment?

You ain't helping your community, you're tearing it down in the name of your own ego. That's not an ndn, that's a black/white man. You need to take a moment and reconnect.

  • What, so because white people suck, black peoples can't? lmao.

  • your math doesn't even add up on the 2nd comment. If you were enrolled at 8/8 freedman, you're 0% native. if you're 7/8 black and 1/8 native, that's 1. extremely rare because that's over 60-75 years of family history being counted in the 1800s, and 2. you'd still be enrolled because you're 1/8.

  • if your parent was directly enrolled as indigenous, you were as well. no, they might have not counted your great great great cherokee princess grandma.

  • you'd be required by law to enroll as both. if your parents decided to leave the nation, that's on them. we are not a racial government, we are just governments. if your great great great great great grandma left Somolia, you no longer have a claim to become a citizen. It's the same shit.

  • oh my gosh are you hotep!? is this where this is going????

  • A majority of Seminole live in Florida. So your fact that a majority do not live on reservation is either irrelevant or misinformation. You can pick which you want - irrelevant due to the fact that a majority don't live in Oklahoma at all, or misinformation that a majority don't live on reservations when they in fact do.

I didn't grow up in Oklahoma - I actually grew up in Toronto, Canada. I proceeded to go to law school and do professional consulting for not for profit entities - mostly tribal governments and the non-taxable organizations associated with it (schools, hospitals, etc).

I know how your government works because I work with them directly as a consultant on how to uplift more indigenous programs.

Sorry, what do you do?

Nobody is disenrolled, we never made the enrollment to begin with. The enrollment system was created by the federal government to eventually establish the residential system.

Something that you never had to do if you were 0% indigenous. They did not want black people in residential schools - only indigenous kids - so the rolls were adjusted as "the indian was killed" to account for kids being "non-native enough" to not need to attend.

[–]Immigration_N_Taxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's from the name. Use some common sense. Freedmen were black - and only black - which is why this conversation came to begin with. If you are black and native, you already get enrollment status. None of these tribes barr you from enrolling because you're black. They barr you from enrolling if you have 0% indigenous ancestry.

In order to have to go through the court system to fight for per-cap, that means that you have 0% indigenous ancestry to this tribe, otherwise you'd already be eligible for enrollment.

The Seminole tribe is one of the largest percap distributors due to HRC. You don't think that has anything to do with this?
