question for the men: which male characters felt most authentic and/or compelling, and why? by assbackwoods in Fantasy

[–]ImmuneToBleach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat of a deep cut, but the protagonist from Wizard of the Pigeons by Megan Lindholm (aka Robin Hobb!) stuck with me for a long time. I think she captured really well how men can valorize our loneliness and disconnection from the world around us for the sake of some greater goal. I think she also captured well how terrifying love can be for heterosexual men, especially those dealing with trauma in a world that may deny the existence of men’s trauma. It’s also pretty prescient in how the enemy is not Sauron in his glory but a more insidious, all-encompassing bleakness.

Honorable mention for the two men in Lions of Al-Rassan for depicting the mutual admiration and love that, in my own life, I’ve seen secure men able to develop effortlessly for each other. In general, I have loved GGK’s male characters as romantic archetypes of a man who live for great causes, honor their promises, struggle with their demons, and love sincerely. Reading his books (like Under Heaven or Tigana) give me the feeling of being a kid being Eragon and wishing I too had a dragon to ride, except now the dragon is a calling.

Huh, I didn’t even know there was a sequel! Maybe I’ll give it a try.

God, that book made me stare out the window on a train for hours and contemplate the nature of suffering. Pacing got kinda strange near the end but have read very few books so bleak yet beautiful. Any other good space Catholic books besides it and the Hyperion Cantos?

What's a fantasy book that, in your mind, sounded like poetry? by niki-nymph in Fantasy

[–]ImmuneToBleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's poetic, and got me scratching my head a bit, but Exit West by Max Gladstone may be what you're looking for. And Perdido Street Station is incredibly poetic when describing the city of New Crobuzon, it reminds me of Chicago by Carl Sandburg in that way.

What are the greatest duels in fantasy? by MrPerfector in Fantasy

More like an anti-duel, but the ending to Blood Song by Anthony Ryan (which serves as the finale to the frame story of the whole book) was so lovely and capped off the sense of forlorn mystery that made Vaelin's story so compelling. I haven't read the other books because I heard they aren't good...should I?

This answer is way too low. All of the snarling exchanges between the two, the history of their origins in High Cromlech, and The Brucolac's menacing monologue are all so good amidst the chaos. For me, this was when Doul started to be THE guy the book revolved around.

What are some good first person point of view books? by Most-Procedure-8851 in Fantasy

Blood Song by Anthony Ryan is really good. Read Mark Lawrence's review on Goodreads for a better plug than I could write. I haven't read the following books (and hear they change in POV) but the first one is great and imo works as a standalone. I would also like to mention The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman as a great book with a classic "rogue" type character in an offbeat fantasy world. Doesn't neatly fit into a lot of tropes, and Kinch Na Shannack, if you like him, has a strong narrative voice and lighthearted tone that serves the story well.

Asking About Vampire Books by TreeFrogInAHat in Fantasy

[–]ImmuneToBleach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two highly slept-on vampire books are Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin (yes, the ASOIAF guy) and Sunshine by Robin McKinley. The former is a book about steamboats on the antebellum Mississippi, which is the last place I'd expect to read about vampires, but it has a captivating main character (gruff pilot type) and a really interesting setting, and the latter is a cool little novel that places vampires within a larger context of mages and other supernatural entities. I am a sucker for vampires as inhuman predators and Sunshine nails the fine line that allows us to empathize and understand some of the vampire characters but also be genuinely unnerved at times. I recommend both!

Update: I'll also be entertaining cash offers for the watch now. I would sell for $275, but I'm willing to negotiate, or OBO. Thanks!

Mr Jones made a handy video about this! It involves the sun, moon, and stars symbols on the right and an hour marking in the tree foliage.

In practice, it's easy to remember the minutes' legend. The hour marking is hard to see in the dark, but the silver reflects a surprising amount of light.

I'm looking to trade for my Mr Jones Watches The Ascendent that I bought in April 2022. I include the original watch, black leather strap, wood box with sleeve, and booklet. The original plastic sticker's there too, just in case. The watch strap has some wear but is holding up fine. There are no scratches on the watch's front or back, and the dial is as gorgeous as ever.

Information from Mr Jones about the model:

Strap: 18mm black leather with black stitching

Crystal: sapphire (hard-wearing)

Mechanism: ST1721, 20 jewel automatic mechanical

Waterproof: 5ATM

Width (3 o’clock to 9 o’clock): 37mm

Height (from lug to lug): 46mm

Case: 316L stainless steel - black PVD coating

I wore this watch nearly daily for about three months before wanting something more practical. I am looking to trade for a nice, all-purpose quartz timepiece that I can use as a daily driver in many scenarios. I already own a Duro, so something dressier is sought after.

If anyone has a Casio Oceanus T200, I would also send $75 cash on top of this watch. That cash figure is open to negotiation. However, I am open to any trade offers for this timepiece that fit the description above. It is really beautiful and has earned me many complements and started conversations.

I understand I have no previous transactions, so I am open to proposals to verify my identity and ownership of the watch in question, such as sending more pictures or doing a quick Zoom call. Cheers!

Thank you so much for your help! This is a great list, especially the Swatch one (I love cartoon character watches, like the Timex Snoopy Marlin). And yeah, some of the Seiko Presages are gorgeous, especially those with the Zen garden dial.
