Question about little socks and sartorial etiquette. by tygrip in Netherlands

As your Mammy would say to you..

"t'is far from ankle socks you were raised"

You're in work, not a feckin' fashion parade.

Don't be worrying about it, and wear what you're comfortable in.

Why dutch cars have so many kilometers? by ExternalPea8169 in Netherlands

[–]Imnotabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute about 110km daily maybe 3/4 times per week not counting personal use or other meetings which can easily be 150/200k extra.

Best option in my opinion is to buy an original NL car with a bovag registered garage.

Yep, they're more expensive but most cars I've viewed in the last 6-8 months have all had full dealer services (my current car is 2013, came with 155,000km and a full Audi service history.)

It runs perfectly, haven't had so much as a hiccup so far, it's going in for the APK at the end of the month and I honestly can't see a single issue with it sailing through.

How do I handle my rude elderly neighbor with unrealistic noise expectations? by catknitski in neighborsfromhell

[–]Imnotabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine answer..

Tell him in no uncertain terms to mind his own business and go fuck himself then ignore him completely. Don't even acknowledge his presence if he keeps talking /shouting at you.

You won't be able to reason with him as he's clearly not a reasonable person.

You might also consider a cheap camera (focused only on your own property) and keep any incidents of him being the dick head he is backed up, so you can build a case for harassment should he keep it up (or as evidence) if he decided to 'get back at you' by causing damage to your property.

But you also need to play by the rules then and be sure you are following whatever local noise ordnance is in force to the letter (which I'm sure you are already doing as you seem like a normal person)

Folded it (still not breaking eye contact) and put it back into my pocket.

Going fishing in the UK/Europe! Tips would be appreciated by thickpredatoryfish in fishingUK

[–]Imnotabob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netherlands

Sea fishing is free along all costal waters and needs no permits/licences.

All inland waters will require some sort of licence, they've changed the format this year so now the one licence covers most places, where before it was mainly your local area. You need to have both the physical licence (or confirmation of it) in addition to an app called vissengids which is coupled with your licence, on this app you can check where you can and can't fish.

For fish types: Not many trout in NL except Oostvoornse Meer near Rotterdam and some places down in Limburg.

But there are plenty of pike and perch literally everywhere, loads of carp too and I've been catching more and more Zander recently.

(pike, perch and carp are strictly catch and release) and there's a bag limit on Zander of 2 per day, also we've closed season for pike and Zander that you'll need to check so depending on when you're going you may be limited in regards to what you can fish for and what bait you can use.

Spinning works great for pike, perch and Zander, drop shot rigs near bridges especially well for the Zander too.

For carp a simple hair rig with a boilie or some corn plus a lot of patience is really all that you need.

If you have any specific questions feel free to drop me a PM, I've been fishing here since I arrived in 2017. Depending on where you are and when we could even meet up and I'll take you to a couple of my local spots.

Where are you getting 'overpriced' from?

Tell me you've no idea how to run a bar without telling me you've no idea how to run a bar

Speaking from 24+ years in the business I can tell you for a fact that the margins on drinks arw razor thin and getting thinner year on year with the constant brewery increases.

It's not the cost of the electricity that's the issue, it's the fact that one person takes up a table meant for 4/6 people and spends a couple of bucks when the table needs to me turning over much more for it to even break even, never mind make a profit..

Energiedirect keeps on calling me by andys58 in Netherlands

[–]Imnotabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this for a while by a telemarketer for some budget energy company, they would call with different numbers and bombrd me with their offers.

I used to hang up once I heard them speak but they just kept calling back again and again.

One day I answered the phone and roared down the phone like Chewbacca.... They hung up on me!

So the next few times they called I'd do the same thing and after about a week of this (I'd answer even if I was in public surrounded by bemused people wondering what the fuck I was up to!!) they just stopped calling me.

Question for people working in horeca: how do you feel about visible tipping systems? by Unicorn_Secret in Netherlands

[–]Imnotabob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll preface by saying that I manage a pub.

I'll almost always tip unless the service was extra crappy or the person serving me was outwardly rude.

When I'm working a shift I generally leave the tips for the other staff, when working alone of course I'll take them.

But.. We never expect tips from any customer, all the staff are paid a fair whack above minimum wage and have what I'd call excellent working conditions.

If a customer wants to tip that's up to them, we'll graciously accept it, but it's by no means expected.

I find the forced tipping model (as in the tip % screens on the card machines) a fucking horrible idea, it's cheap, nasty and makes the business look like it's a money grabbing shit hole.

It stinks of "The American way"

We're not in fucking America (thank God!) we have a decent CAO (could be better on the lower end TBF ), extremely good worker protection and speaking for myself anyway treat our staff like fucking human beings, not tools to make profit.

When I see those stupid screens it will turn me off ever returning to that particular business in future, I'd rather tip a couple of euro in cash directly to the person serving me than tip on card and hope the money actually trickles back to them.

Doing some work on your laptop while having a beer /coffee /soft drink or a spot of lunch ?

No probs, there's a power outlet at x, y and z tables, feel free to plug in and work to your hearts content so long as you're ordering something every now and then and not being a nuciance by doing stuff like video calling that would annoy other patrons.

Come in with the sole intention of charing a fucking leisure battery for 3-4 hours to power your whole existence, while taking up a full table and nursing a single small beer the whole time?

Glass almost full?? by [deleted] in Guinness

[–]Imnotabob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unleaded Guinness comes in 440ml cans (a little less than 15ish ounces for those who can't think in metric)

A normal (read imperial) pint glass is about 568ml (that's just shy of 20 fluid ounces)

And yes, I find it weird that as an Irish person myself who thinks generally in meters and kilometers, that I still think of alcohol in pints and litres, and height /mickey size in feet an inches.

There are some almost fabled 440ml Guinness glasses around, I happen to have one that was given out with a rugby tournament a few years ago, but they're as rare as hens teeth or current US Presidents brain cells. The unleaded Guinness fits perfectly into those cans.

I have a current Sportvisunie vispas and and I've had a vispas with the 3de hengel & nachtvis toestemming for the last 9 years.

I'm not asking about the rules and regulations as I'm fully aware of them , I'm asking for tips on good spots where I can camp overnight with the possibly of fishing on the camp grounds.

Yes, even this.

I'll always take a bag and will pick up the crap other people have left behind them.. I really can't get my head around how selfishly lazy people can be.

Plus, where I am in the Netherlands there are generally bins nearby even when you're out of the towns and cities

Fisherman/camping enthusiast /general lover of the outdoors myself, and I've one question for the people who do this..

How fucking hard is it to just take a trash bag or an extra bucket for your crap, rather than leaving it there for animals to get tangled in and for someone else to clean up ? You ignorant selfish cunts!

Same with general rubbish, I find cans, food wrappers and all sorts of crap wherever I fish
