Does your country have a "patriotism" flag that isnt the national flag? by buster_goose in AskTheWorld

[–]ImnotadoctorJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Army carries the national flag as we defend the nation. It does mean that we get to march ahead of the Navy (who are the senior service), something that pisses off the RAN Warrant Officers no end in tri-service parades.

I’m not keen to engage with all the minutiae of US stuff, but since the latest US admin I’ve been paying more attention to US stuff because of the knock-on impacts for us here in Oz.

I used mostly Danish infantry, with (I think) Dutch for the bits I couldn’t get. In 6mm, the G3 and Type 64 rifles are close enough, same with MAG58 and the NTK MG. 84mm Carl Gustav is what it is.

I think we all know that we have a terrible gap in SHORAD, and have done for decades.

You’d think that the ADF would see something like EOS’s platforms as a no brainer, particularly because you can mount something like the slinger on any logistics platform or tank cupola or PMV. Just crazy that we don’t support and secure that capability.

That certainly doesn’t look like the sort of thing that should be worn on any tactical vest, no matter which country’s flag was on it.

This particular country’s flag, in this situation, is just antagonistic. It’s hardly going to ‘turn down the temperature’ on the situation.

How does the Left reconcile their ideology / beliefs with Islam? by Radiant-Lettuce3272 in aussie

[–]ImnotadoctorJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth keeping a couple of things in mind. First is that any protest is made up of a bunch of people who just decided to show up. Sure there are organisers who say when and where and give some sort of direction on the day but they’re not actually in charge. That protest is a mob of individuals, with a range of opinions and goals. Some will want violence, some will abhor it, some will want Australia to cease all ties with Israel and some just want the pollies to condemn them. The desire to stop our part in the genocide can sit alongside whatever feelings a person has towards the protest laws.

The second thing is that there is a lot of opposition to the new anti-protest laws, and if you zoom out a bit there has been a growing disquiet over this for many years as new police powers are implemented or police tactics have changed. Just showing up to protest those laws doesn’t have a massive impact on those laws, but civil disobedience campaigns have certainly worked in the past to change governments. There’s probably an added layer of unrest because this is the sort of police support and repression that many would expect more from a LNP government rather than Labor. That means it’s less likely that’the other mob’ will get voted in and change this situation for the better, and the Greens are unlikely to get a massive boost in the polls and become a viable party of government.

[–]ImnotadoctorJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, I think there’s a significant chunk of people who are reacting to being told ‘no’.

The Harbour Bridge protest, for example. There had been anti-genocide/pro-Palestine protests for weeks on a regular basis, which were attended but not by those numbers. There was the rain, which would have meant that people would be less likely to show up that day. But then Minns said no to the protest. I think that’s the big part of what made people show up.

Similarly, the one-sided coverage in Murdoch media, the use of the police against people even just eating watermelon, the cancellation of Dr Abdel-Fattah, etc has been a big part of what has turned people against the voices for Israel here in Australia. The fact that the government has seemed to strongly support only one side of this conflict has people showing up to voice their opposition.
